Me- jane, (Copyright, 1928, by Audio Service, Chicago.) OLD PARCHMENT COMES TO LIGHT Document, Yellow With Age, Dates Back to Year 1644 Montreal, Jan. 7.--Out of a farm house near Berthier, Que., has come a yellowed parchment 284 years old, which' is intriguing antiguar- fans here, who are trying to trace the travels that led an ancient land lease in the Channel Islands to the District of Montreal. Channel Islanders came to New France in fair numbers but most of them settled in the Gaspe region, and this is the first occasion upon which any clue to them has been found so far west in Quebec. Written in old French, the deed was drawn on June 15, 1644, at St. Helier, Island of Jersey, before "Jean Dumaresq, gentleman, Lieut. Colonel George de Cartier and Es- quire, captain of militia, controller of His Majesty's Royal Navigation, Bailiff in the Isle of Jersey." He, it is set forth, draws his authority from "His Sovereign Majesty Char- les the First of that name. by the Grace of God King of England, of Scotiand, of France, of Ireland, de- fender of the faith," etc. In the deed one, Daniel Syvect leases two parcels of land, to one. Jéan Hubert, for twelve bushels of wheat per annum, and there is a sublease to Jacques Asplet and Jacques Francois Asplet. RELICS OF TRADING POSTS ARE FOUND Dr. D. A. Stewart Reports on Research Work Carried on in North i Winnipeg, Jan, 7. -- Traces of old trading posts have heen found along the Assiniboine river, some | of them more than a century old, | Several sites of former trading posts have heen located by Dr, D, A. Ste- wart, Medical Superintendent of Manitoba Sanitorium, after years of research work, Dr. Stewart gave an address here recently on the subject of the ancient trading posts, as reported in the Manitoba Free Press, and said he had discoy- ered the sites by marks left in the earth, hollows that were once cel- lars and through the finding of charred wood, 'huffalo bones and wooden stockades. It may be assumed, therefore, that the new ship should be classed as a small battleship for coast defence, No doubt her speed will be higher than the nominal 18 knots of the Braun- schweig, but it certainly will not ap- proach that of contemporary 10,000 | ton cruisers, ranging from 31.5 to 36 knots, Diesel engines have been selected as the method of propulsion, The ship will be unusually broad of beam, with comparatively light draught-- doubtless with a view to possible jn shore operations in the shallow w ters of the Baltic. This sugges that her machinery will have to b arranged on a novel plan, in view o the amount of hcad room required for an ordinary Diesel installation, Various armaments have been pro posed for this singularly original de sign. The most plausible include six 11 inch guns as its main featur It is by no means out of the question for heavier guns than this to b mounted.
