PAGE ZIGHT THE OSHAWA DAILY TIMES, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 15, 1928 OSHAWA INTERMEDIATES OPEN SEASON AT NEWMARKET JAN. 3 Fine Material For 1929 ~~ City Team Predicted OH.A. Junior Group Opens The Big Four Junior group started the O.H.A, campaign at the Arena Gardens last evening before a' small crowd. The opening game of the doubleheader provid- ed something of a surprise when Frank Sullivan's University of To- ronto sextet trimmed the Toronto 'Canoe Club juniors by a 2to 1 score. The second game. proved an easy victory for Marlboros, who defeated the Parkdale Canoe Club by 7 to 1. Both games were poo samples of hockey. The Toronto Canoe Club youngsters, who gave Marlboros such a good run for the 8,P.A, tro- phy, made a sofry showing against the Collegians, They could dv nothing right and played a selfish individual o that made it easy tor the students to protect their net. Glenn Brydson, the Red Ring team's right wing, received a gash fn his leg in the first period ana the injury not only made him of little use for the rest of the even- ing, but it seemed to take the punch out of the Paddlers' forward® line, Brydson came back on ths ice in the second period and play- ed most of the third period, but the injury was plainly bothering him, and he could not show his real effectiveness, He had three stitches put in it after the game and will be out for a week or so, Both Marlboros and Parkdale were weakened by the loss of play- ers through illness or injury. Early in the second game Eddie Convey of Malboros received a gash in the foot which caused his retirement. He was taken to St. Michael's hos- pital, where stitches were put in the wound, BERT JOHNSON Famous Canadian Magician, who will appear at the New Martin Monday night. The Oshawa City Intermediate 0.H.A, hockey team, grouped with Varsity, Willowdale, Richmond Hill, and Newmarket, play their first game on Thursday, January 8rd, 1929, at Newmarket, Therefore it is time to take stock of the situation, and let the public know a few facts regarding the players the manage- ment of the Oshawa City team have lined up, and also what we know or believe of the opposing teams, From present information now available from these teams fit looks as though they are some- what stronger than in previous years, Varsity and. Willowdale hav- ing the advantage of artificial ice, and are speedily rounding into shape, Time Will Tell Willowdale looks like the team to beat in the group, but time will tell, They have on their line- up stars such as "Shrimp" Me- Pherson, who is considered one of the fastest centre men in amateur hockey, having made a. name for himself with the Mariboro Juniors last season, Collins formerly with Peterboro Seniors and "Johnny" McPherson a brother of "Shrimp" on the wings. These two are also rated among the smartest wing men in Toronto, The defence men signed are Underwood und Nu- gent, and they are no slouches, It seems rather sirange that this club can pick the cream from the entire city of Toronto, but Manager Hines of the Willowdale team must know a thing or two. Two Years Ago Varsity have practically the same line-up that visited Oshawa two years ago, with the added ad- vantage of playing together for 80 long they cannot help but be stronger. Richmond Hill are really the team we know nothing about, but as they made such a good show- ing last year, we can expect good hockey from that quarter also, Newmarket, as' we all know al- ways puts out a fast team, and as it took Kitchener three games to put them out last year, also hav- ing nearly the same team intact, they too will provide plenty of real opposition for the other clubs. Now we will take inventory! Just As Swift Our own local intermediates on paper look as if they will be just as fast as in former years, if not faster. While "Yank" Avery and "Sammy" Lowe will not be in uni- form and possibly "Tommy" John- ston, the list of players below should strike joy to the heart of every Oshawa hockey fan. "Tommy" Johnston bas been laid up temporarily but will, in all probability, be ready for ac- tion near the middle of January. For defence there is Crossett, who made a mame for himself in Port Hope. Bond, last year with the Parkview Club, Atkinson, of Whitby, and Chartrand," whose stellar playing on our last year team can still be remembered by many. On the forward line we have Houck, Joyce, Rowden and Con- lin, from last year's team. For that occasion the ambit- fous city will erect a new swimming pool and lay out a new rowing course, Other big undertakings are also well under way at the present time, From the Pacific coast, Vancou- ver, home of Percy Williams, the world's fastest human, comes a bid for the holding there of the next Canadian Olympic trials in 1932, You can hardly blame the west coast fans for getting all ex- cited over a hletics when they pro- duce such wonders as Williams, From Alberta comes: word -that the 1929 track and field champicn- | SD eory rans Look FoRmARD TO A 816 * 1] INDOOR TRACK MEETAT THE COLISEUM | IN TORONTO DURING TEBRUARY ships will be held at Banff, with the C P.R, installing a ngw quar- ter-mile track for the purpose, In the Queen City, athletic or- ganizations are already planning an extensive indoor meet in the middle of February, which will be held in the Coliseum on a new indoor track which it is claimed will he the fastest in America, Plans have been drawn up by Mr, G, Ross Workman of Toronto, who has de- signed a track 12 feet wide baulked at the sides, and 440 feet to the lap, This. mee: will be held almost at the same time as the famcus Melrose A.C in the States, and although nothing official has bern given out, it is expected that there will be some of the world's most famous s.ars in action at Toronto, Kitchener Win From Leaders Ont., Kitchener, Dec. 15.--The Kitchener Flying Dutchmen scor- ed their most sensational victory of the season here last night by overcoming a two goal lead in the last five minutes to hand the De- troit Olympics their second defeat of the season by a 3 to 2 score. Vie- tory came to the Dutch camp to u great extent because Detroit elect- ed to play a defensive game in the last period, but the stolid locals re- fused to bow in defeat. Finally their persistent efforts were re- warded and after that there was no holding them, the entire winged K'¢c swarming around the Detroit net continuously in the last five minutes. Then came the tieing goal with two minutes to go and the Dutch opened the throttle an- other notch, with the result that Dame Fortune crowned their ef- forts with the winning goal with only 25 seconds to go. JOE MARKS SAYS HOUDINI'S SECRETS SURVIVE It remains for Bert Johnston to explode the fallacy that the sec- rets of the great Houdini died with him. It only takes one glance wt the stage settings of this Canadian Magician 10 prove beyond a doubt that at least some of Houdini"s secrets still re- main as a token to the greatest Magician of all times, the great Harry Houdini. Bert Johns on is called the Camadian Houdini and is living up to. the name, He has been doing magic for twenty- eight years, and knows how the public like it passed out to them. His line of rapid fire conversa- tion takes the weird effect out of magic, Not only a whirlwind ma- gician, he is also a versatile enter- tainer. The Falls goal that tied the count and sent the contest into overtime came in the last minute of regular time from the stick of Rene Four nier, and was strongly disputed by the London players, but was finally allowed by Referee Ike Masters, Play was not too exciting in the first period, in which hoth teams checked closely, and good openings on either goal were few, The lone marker of the stanza went to the Panthers, and was a lucky one, King shot the disc from the blue line and it went through Fournier's legs to beat Beaudry, whose view was blocked, The second period saw plenty of action.
