respected criminal lawyer and politician. Williamsburg’s main east/west road accommodated three churches, hence Church Street. Today the United Church (formerly Methodist) and St. John’s Anglican Church remain. In the nine- teenth century a brick Presbyterian Church was located east of the present Community Centre. It was torn down in 1962. Until 1974 most roads in Cartwright were identified by Line and Conces- sion numbers. With the arrival of Re- gional Government a process was begun to give names of Cartwright’s early settlers to the concession roads: Byers, Mountjoy, Devitt, Bradburn, McKee, Edgerton, Jobb, Fallis, Beacock, Proutt and Malcolm. Not all the pioneers came from Ireland, Matthias Proutt had emigrated from England and James Mal- colm and his wife Elspeth had arrived from Scotland. The choice of these names recognizes their families’ service on the Cartwright council. Beginning in 1882 four members of the Devitt family served on the Cart- wright council beginning with John Devitt who was a councillor and then Reeve. In 1905 he was elected as MPP for Durham West and served until 1919. His son Creighton Devitt, served as Reeve from 1936 to 1943. John McKee was Reeve of Cartwright from 1890 to 1895. James Byers served on the Cartwright council for many years and was Reeve from 1908 to 1913. Rupert Byers served on council from 1928 to 1942. Members of the Jobb family served on the Cart- wright council for nearly 30 years, beginning in 1897 when Robert Jobb was a councillor. Two members of the Bradburn family were council- lors. James Beacock served as a councillor from 1896 to 1901 and William Beacock served as the township clerk from 1906 to 1949, a record 43 years! These early pioneers worked tirelessly to establish astable environment for their successors. It is fitting that their memory is commemorated in this way. By Paul Arculus Focus on Scugog G.T.
