On that day, Laureen Harper, wife of Prime Minister Steven Harper, and Marc Kielburger, world-renowned speaker and activist, visited the township. Both brought important, but different messages for those attending their venues. By 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 9 more than 1,300 people, includ- ing Grades 7 and 8 students from across Durham, packed the Scugog, Community Centre to hear a moy- ing and inspirational talk by Mare Kielburger. Marc and his brother Craig are the founders of “Me to We” and “Free the Children”. Their message is “The World Needs Your Kid”. Marc Kielburger Laureen Harper made a brief stop in Port Perry the same day, enjoying a tour of the town with local mu- nicipal and business leaders. Following the tour, Ms. Harper travelled to Nestleton Waters Inn to show her support for the local Uxbridge-Scugog Animal Shelter. Accompanied by MP Aaron O'Toole and, Mayor Chuck Mer- cier, local dignitaries and sup- porters of the animal shelter, Ms Harper spoke passionately about the need for proper facilities and encouraged the community to financially support the new animal shelter. Laureen Harper Hiring within the administration, Scugog Town- ship has appointed Ian Roger as the township’s Chief Administrative Officer, effective August 25. Mr. Roger, who has been with the municipality for four years, replaced the township’s previous CAO, Bev Hendry, who held the post for nine years. Prior to his appointment, Mr. Roger held the position of Direc- tor of Public Works and Parks and Deputy CAO.
