After unusally mild weather a couple of weeks ago, organizers are hopeful that ice conditions will be suitable - especially after having to cancel the popular tournament last year, due to poor ice. The boys and girls of winter are anxious to get back out on the lake for a day of fun and competition and the action is scheduled to get underway at 7:30 a.m. this Saturday, February 2. Unlike traditional hockey games, “pond hockey” has only three players on the ice and no goaltender. Players are required to wear hockey skates and helmets and although there is no contact, protective equipment is recommended. Once again this year, organizers are expecting a full slate of 36 teams in three divisions — men’s, ladies, and family / mixed. Each will play a minimum of three - 30 minute games. And there’s no need to go hungry. Two food ven- dors, the Boat House Café at Port Perry Marina and Fox Catering will be on hand to fill your stomach and quench your thirst. Need a break from the games? Take part in the “shoot to score” contest, which is open to anyone who wishes to participate. All proceeds from the tournament will be donated to Lakeridge Health, to put towards the purchase of a neonatal heart monitor. Organizers are hoping to raise enough to finish paying for the $25,000 monitor this year. There will also be some raffles and a silent auc- tion.
