The work the kids —- who range in age from 9 to 13 - will do, will vary depending on the needs of the particular charity that is being spotlighted that week. “We will be working with organizations like Big Broth- ers; the Canadian Cancer Society, Community Care, Community Living, the Salvation Army and Children’s Aid,” explains Lisa. “With Community Care in the spring, for exam- ple, they'll be doing yard clean up and working with seniors. It’s exciting.” Lisa is also happy to welcome older youth to help out with the group and earn their community volunteer hours at the same time. Lisa says that organizations are “embracing the idea. I've heard many positive things from them. I've heard from many that the children are the future of volunteering. If you show them at a young age, that will transfer for their lives and they will volunteer when they are older too. They are excited that children will learn younger about the benefits of volunteering.” Joanne Macoomb is Grace’s mother, and she is hap- py her daughter will be able to experience the pleasure of giving back in a structured, predictable way. “I think just making her aware of anybody who needs help in the community, there doesn’t seem to be a way she would find out about that,” says Joanne. “T have her involved in lots of activities, but she doesn’t really have any idea about some of the older 1893 Scugog St., Port Perry ‘11.NOVEMBER.56 final indd 27 people who might be struggling on their own. It’s a good way for her to learn and to be a part of the community. I want them to see that not everybody is as fortunate, and to be compassionate to others.” It seems to be working already. “I like that we are going to help people in Do Good Kids,” says Grace.
