His free spirit led him to take a position with a publishing firm as an editor, a job which led him to become a commercial writer in print and eventually in the video industry. Baking and breadmaking has always been in Jim’s blood. His mom, Mar Gertrude Wills, was a fantastic baker. “We used to refer to her as a demon baker and a lousy cook,” Jim reminisced, smiling as he spoke. “She was an awesome baker, but was terrible when it came to cooking meals. We always had the best pies and breads and often our meals consisted of exactly that.” In 1980 while working on a book, Jim. struck up a friendship with Ralph Price, one of our own residents. Ralph heard of acentury home in Prince Albert becom- ing available and immediately called Jim. “T’ve found the perfect house for you!” Ralph exclaimed and Jim, upon seeing the 150 year old Victorian home wanted it. The deal closed and Jim spent the next two years renovating the house into one of our community’s finest, traditionally restored homes. It was then that Jim decided to take the baking talents his mother had instilled in him and started a company named after her. Mary G was opened and his first task was to build an oven; not a conventional oven, but a hand built, 22 tonne wood burning oven in his back yard. He had so much fun with the project he decided to take on a dealer- ship for a California company, which assembles and installs wood requires advance preparation, which begins with the menu and the shopping list.
