Samuel McLaughlin's Parkwood Estate in Oshawa used Chevrolet shares and Sam's G.M. shares to regain control of General Motors in 1916. That same year Sam began building the biggest house in Canada, a fifty-five roomed country house which he named Parkwe In December 1918 the McLaughlins sold their company to General Motors and General Motors of Canada was created with Sam as its first president. Ford ceased produc- tion, General Motors stopped production of all its cars except Buick and Cadillac, GM’s Oshawa plant closed its doors for several weeks, but more significantly Durant was again ousted from the board of General Motors. By the end of 1921, the Oshawa GM production was back to normal and Durant had started a new company, Durant Mo- tors, and opened a factory in Leaside in what was then north eastern Toronto. He later lost everything in the great depression and died penniless in 1947. Sam McLaughlin remained on the board of directors of General Motors until 1967 but, even at the age of 95, still main- tained a role as chairman of the board of General Motors of Canada. His faithful wife Adelaide had died of cancer in 1958 just a month before their sixtieth wedding anniversa ugh Sam’s generosity and his McLaughlin Foundation, hundreds of charities and institutions have received gener- ous support. Among them are the Ontario College of Art, the University of Toronto, the Oshawa General Hospital and the Salvation Army. His stately home Parkwood Estate was left to the Oshawa General Hospital along with financial provision for its maintenance.
