3 RR. "A Family Tradition for 125 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Monday, December 23, 1991 - 3 Handi Transit use on Increase, service may need second vehicle The Township Councils of Uxbridge, Brock and Scugog got together last week for their annual Christmas "Get Acquainted" Party. The event, which has been taking place for the past 9 years was hosted this year by Scugog Township. The occasion gives the councils of the northern municipalities a chance to discuss topics of mutual interest and get to know each other. Highlight of this years get-together was the arrival of Santa and his two elves who handed out surprise gifts to the Mayors of the three communities and the Regional Chairman. Seen here above, back row, Regional Chairman Gary Herrema, Santa (former Brock Mayor Allan McPhail), Elf #1 (former Uxbridge Mayor Bill Ballinger) and Elf #2 (former Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor). Front row, from left, Brock Mayor Don Hadden, Uxbridge Mayor Gerri Lynn O'Connor and Scugog Mayor Howard Hall. By Scott Anderson Increased ridership on Handi Transit may force officials to call for an additional vehicle for the area. Doug Manuel, general man- ager for Handi Transit, says the number of riders in Ux- bridge and Scugog are on the rise and predicts by the end of the year the service will have provided 1,400 trips for the us- ers in the two municipalities. He estimates there are ap- proximately 80 disabled per- sons who now use the service. In past years the ridership ratio tended to be slanted with two-thirds Scugog residents to one-third Uxbridge residents, but he says the trend has changed. In fact, Mr. Manuel says it is now almost the opposite. By the end of the year he predicts that more than 800 of the rides will originate from Uxbridge, while approximately 500 will origi- nate from Scugog. He said the number of Scugog - users dropped for an unknown reason . over the summer. Mr. Manuel says he is not sure why the numbers have fluctuated, adding "it's no long- er one-sided." The vehicle which operates 50 hours a week logs approxi- mately 300 kilometres per day. Due to the increasing num- bers and demand for the vehi- cle, Mr. Manuel says the organ- ization is contemplating the need for a second vehicle. No timetable has been set for the new vehicle, but he believes if the numbers continue to show the need, they might have to look atitin a year or a year and a half. "I can see the need coming," he says. Handi Transit, has been op- erating a vehicle for disabled residents in Uxbridge and Scu- gog since 1987. The service is funded on a 50:50 split between the two municipalities who re- ceive grants from the Ministry of Transportation. Mr. Manuel says last year each community paid approximately $16,000 for the service. J Scugog Mayor Howard Hall gets a laugh out a gift given to him by Santa and his ??Elves?? last Tuesday night. The Mayors and councillors of Brock, Uxbridge and Scugog, all northern communties in Durham Region, enjoyed a social evening which included conversation, euchre and a buffet style meal.
