"A Family Tradition for 125 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Monday, December 23, 1991 - 13 Durham approves 3.3% increase in water/sewer rates By Scott Anderson Durham Regional council has approved plans to raise the 1992 water and sewer rates in the region. Regional councillors whole- heartedly approved the plan to hike the sewer and water rates by a combined total of approxi- mately 3.3 per cent next year. The plan calls for residential users to pay less for their water than do the local industries. Residential users will realize a hike of 3.1 per cent, while in- dustrial users will see a boost of 3.5 per cent. Under the terms of the agree- ment, the average residential user will see an increase of 2.4 per cent for water and 4 per cent for sewer services. According to a joint report is- sued by the Finance & Adminis- tration and Works Committees, the impact of the proposed hike for a residential customer using 60,000 gallons of water per year will be 94 cents per quarter for water and $1.78 per quarter for sewer services. Based on quarterly billings, the uniform regional rate last year for water was $39.25, and sewer was $44.30 for a total of $83.55. With the increase the quarterly billings are estimat- ed tojump to $86.27. Works Committee vice- chairman Yvonne Christie says the figure is a combined rate for sewer and water, and will differ should a customer use only half of the services. For example residents in Blackstock who have water hook up, but not sewage capacity will pay lesser fees. Commercial and industrial users were also hit with an in- crease, slightly higher than the residential hike. The average combined rate increase for 1992 for industry is approximately 3.5 per cent, but sewer rates differ for each cus- tomer due to the size of the business. The combined increases for the region's top 25 companies varied from as low as 2.4 per cent to 3.5 per cent. John Aker, Works committee chairman, said the increase for 1992 was "the right recommen- dation for the times." Adding that it was an economic deci- sion. Mr. Aker said that the com- mittee had originally recom- mended an increase of 4.1 per Utica Day Care made a special visit to the Uxbridge-Scugog Animal Ann Barrett, animal control officer, with pet food, as well as blankets that they collected. The difference in the costs will be made up by the Rate Sta- bilization Fund. Mr. Aker said the committee will dip into this fund for $4.8 million for sewer services and $2.8 million for water for a total of $7.6 million. cd dar wn pa 4; Centre to present DAN VERNON DAN'S CUSTOM PAINT & REPAIR Autobody Refinishing & Painting of Cars, Trucks, Bikes & Boats « MIG Welding « Window Tinting « Complete Interior Clean-up 1-416-263-2443 Kelly, Zuly, Greenway, Bruce BARRISTERS and SOLICITERS Motor Vehicle - Criminal Personal Injury - Wills Real Estate - Corporate & Family Law Commercial EVENINGS & WEEKENDS BY APPOINTMENT 114 King St. E., Oshawa 723-2278 SCUGOG STREET, PORT PERRY e 985-7334 You can depend on us!"
