They usually come out with the decorations, and the kids love to yuck it up over how their hairstyles, etc., have changed since the year be- fore. "Ohhhhh, look at me!" Belinda inevitably shrieks. "I'LOOK SO GROSS I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!" Well, to Em and me she looks just fine, but there's no reasoning with teenagers about how they look, I guess. Em is our official family historian. The year Kyle and Belinda were bom, she began a little journal that she's updated each Christmas Eve since. She includes the little highlights of the past year, including inches grown and other milestones reached. Re-reading these entries has become as much of an event as looking at old pictures of other Christmas festivities. It occurred to me, as we all talked about 1991 and what should go into this year's yuletide diary, that we had accomplished a heck of a lot in the way of home safety and energy efficiency improvements around our house, with a minimum of effort and time. Earlier this month I listed ten easy things you can do around your house to make it more energy efficient. Well, then I made another list of other things Em and I had done over the year to our own house, and I was really surprised at how much got done. For instance, we finally got around to renovating our kitchen, and with the help of a pamphlet from The Hydro, made lots of improvements in the wiring and insulation while we did it. We bought a couple of new major appliances which have features designed to save electricity and cut your running costs. We installed an energy efficient shower- head in our bathroom and reduced the temperature of our hot water tank by a few degrees. When the window in Belinda's bedroom was shot, we decided it was worth it to spend a little extra money and buy a window that'll really keep the cold out, and the heat in. I also spent a bit of time cleaning our major appliances as well as the furnace and air conditioners after I found out that keep- ing them clean and in good running order will reduce the amount of electricity they need to run. We also in- vested in some new energy efficient lightbulbs. Small potatoes? Maybe. But what the heck-here's a piece of Phil's Philosophy for you: like Em's holiday chronicles, it's all the little things you think don't matter much that add up and start to pay you dividends-and not just at Christmas time, either. Merry Christmas! This newspaper, in conjunction with Ontario Hydro, is bringing you Phil's Basement to help "bring home" ideas on how to save energy. To receive the brochure "Energy Hints For Your Home", call Ontario Hydro at 1-800-263-9000 and tell them Phil sent you. COMMERCIAL (C3) IN PORT PERRY.
