Sey, me i. "A Family Tradition for 125 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 17, 1991 - 31 Bantam As win, lose and tie The Port Perry Country Style Bantam As had a busy week, picking up a win, a loss, and a tie in three Jeague games. For game one, they travelled to Port Hope to tangle with the Redmen. Despite a fairly decent effort, the offensive polish was missing and Port came home with a 1-0 loss. James Paterson was strong in the Country Style net, beaten just the once on a second-period screened shot. Monday night, Port hosted Cobourg. On this night, the of- fence was on track, but the team couldn't seem to master playing in their own end. Mike Pashley was left on his own often as the visitors scored three times in the last 5:11 to steal an 8-8 tie. Derek Wright potted two goals to give Cobourg a 2-0 first period lead before Craig Laird made a good move from the corner to cut in front, where Dave Bourgeois banged in the rebound. Jeremy Geer also drew an assist. Cobourg came "Wright" back to lead 3-1 into the second. Jay King got Port close again with his first of two, taking a pass from Jeremy Nor- ton and breaking in to bury his own rebound. Ian McCready started the play in his own end. Wright's fourth made it 4-2 just 22 seconds later. Port went on a run then, scor- ing five straight goals to take a 7-4 lead. Geer potted one from in close, assisted by Laird and Nor- ton. Chad Kearns picked a top corner off a good pass from Ian Shrigley, Scott Heasman starting the play. Bourgeois counted his second when Laird's perfect touch pass sent him in alone. Nor- ton also assisted. Heasman opened the third by blasting one in, assisted by Jason Phillips and Pashley; then King turned on the jets to beat everybody to a clearing pass and again batted his own rebound out of the air as he roared by the post. Kearns and Matt Morris were in on the play as well. Cobourg got one, then Morris' wrist shot from the point got through to open up the three goal lead again, King and Geer assisting. Wright then went to work, scor- ing his fifth of the game and then setting up two more, the last with :41 to play and the Cobourg net minder on the bench, to give the visitors a tie. Game three for the week saw Port on the road again in Ux- bridge. The caliber of the opposi- tion was slightly different but again the offense was firing. King paced the Country Style gang to an 8-4 win with a hat trick and a pair of assists. Sean Ellis opened the scoring on a breakaway after blocking a point shot and moving in to beat the goalie cleanly. Port broke up the close game when King counted a pair of shorthand- ed goals in a 30 second span. Kearns set up the first by clear- ing the Port end, then winning the race to tip the puck into the crease for King. Kearns also started the second, just before King tipped Morris' point shot in front. Tredway fired a high slapper from the deep slot off an Ellis pass to put Port up 4-0. After Ux- bridge got one, Kearns and Phillips combined to apply pressure, allowing Shrigley to walk out from the corner and score. Uxbridge took advantage of some sloppy work in Port's end to score two before the intermis- sion and narrow the score to 5-3. King finished off his hat trick early in the third, muscling his way into the slot to fire the shot, with an assist going to Tredway. Ellis showed some great puck ontrol to move in and pick the corner, set up by King and Tred- way. Shrigley finished Port's scoring, powering a long drive from King and McCready. The home team did score once more, but Port held on comfortably, backed by some solid saves from Paterson. The win was costly however, as Port lost the services of heads-up winger Craig Laird when Rubber- man suffered a concussion and broken collarbone in a collision behind the Uxbridge net. He will be missed both off and on the ice and we wish him a speedy recovery. IGA Juniors The Port Perry IGA Juniors were fortunate to win their game on Saturday against the Pickering Juniors, after suffer- ing two defeats recently. Amy Sinclair played awe- some in net, causing many an upset for Pickering. Pickering scored the first goal immedi- ately in the first half but didn't hang onto the lead for long, thanks to Heather Lally who slid the ring in easily with an assist by Deanna Dempsey. Late into the first half Lindsey Patton picked up the ring, passing it over to Kyla McCrea. McCrea tried her hand at the net but didn't slide it past the goalie so a pass was made to Sarah Coyne who saw her chance and Voila! the tie was broken. Port had a 2-1 lead. : Lisa Dodd, Kyla McCrea and Julie Ball were allotted the penalties although the lat- er thought her penalty for body contact was unjustified. Jenna Norton, and Vicki Stainton gave Pickering's de- fence cause for concern as the rally for the ring continued. At halfway into the second half Julie picked up the ring from assists by Deanna and Heath- er and popped it into the net. Pickering scored again with two minutes left in the game however they weren't success- ful in sliding another ring past Amy. The next game is this Saturday at Thornhill at 9 a.m. Have the Best Christmas SARE on Wheels! Thursday night the Pee Wee As met Ajax on home ice. Ajax scored early in the first period but Port's Kevin Hobbs soon tied the game with an assist by Todd Parry. Ajax again took the lead in the second period but Port jump- ted ahead with two goals scored by Brad Morton and Daryl McEnaney. Assists went to Matt Phillips, Mike Morden and Rob Murphy. Port seemed determined to win this one as they popped two more in the net during the third period. Chris Drury, on defence, found the corner with an assist for Tom Chambers. Brad Morton stuffed in his second goal of the night with assists going to Matt Phillips and Mike Heasman. Final score was Port Perry 5 - Ajax 2. Friday night Port Perry travelled to Cobourg for a 9:15 p.m. start. Port led the way late in the first period with a goal by Daryl McEnaney assisted by Jeff Clarke and Kevin Hobbs. The second period remained scoreless as neither team manag- ed to get the puck past the goalies. It looked like Port would hold on to that one goal lead to finish the game but Cobourg found the net late in the third to end this one in Pineridge Tween Bs a 1-1 tie. Nice try boys, you almost made it! Port hit the trail to the east again on Sunday to meet Port Hope. Port Hope was out to pro- ve a point and they meant business. Port Perry seemed tired and lagged behind for quite some time. Incomplete passes, slow shots and no shots by our boys saw Port Hope take a 4-0 lead half way through the second period. Finally Port Perry got their se- cond wind. Jason Logan scored for Port with assists going to Daryl McEnaney and Mike Heasman. Then Mike Morden popped one past the Port Hope goalie assisted by Daryl McEnaney and Tim Fitzpatrick. Port Hope scored again and then with 36 seconds left on the clock for period two, Tim Fitzpatrick got a break-away and blasted Port's third goal into the net. Port Perry looked better in the third period but the Port Hope goalie grabbed everything in sight. Too bad boys! Final score Port Hope 6 - Port Perry 3. Our goalies Brian Bickmore and Luke Carnaghan hung tough all weekend. Keep up the good work boys, all was not lost! Come and see the Pee Wee As in action again on Friday, Dec. 20 in Port Perry at 9:15 p.m. Lots of cheering is good for their souls - or is that goals? defeat Ajax 9-4 The Pineridge Tween "Bs" travelled to Ajax to play a league game with the Ajax Tweens in Ajax. Port's goalie Christie Aldridge was still down with the flu bug. Port had Michele Bran- ton in goal for the first time as a goalie ever. With one practise under her belt she was willing to give it her best shot. With 13:37 showing on the clock Lea-Ann Wakeford put a nice pass over to Natasha Burgess who fired the ring deep into the Ajax goal to give Port the early lead 1-0. Port only had 10 girls dress- ed for this game but played very well infront of their rookie goalie. Michele stopped two nice shots at the four minute mark and Geni Taylor stole a pass in the Ajax zone and look out - its 2-0 for Port. The period ended with Port Perry ahead 2-0 over Ajax. The second period started off in a hurry when Geni Taylor hit Joan Anderson with a nice pass in the slot and its 3-0 at 14:34 of the second period. At 13:49 Natasha Burgess intercepted ~ a pass in- front and fired a low one past the goalie. At 13:24 Alechia Cracknell jammed one in to make the score 5-0 for Port. Ajax scored at 12:56 and 12:32 to narrow the score to 5-2. At 6:34 Jenny Pashley put a nice pass up to Joan Anderson cruising infront and its 6-2. Natasha Burgess dropped a nice pass to Cindy Verschurren and up she goes under the crossbar for a 7-2 Port Perry lead. At 4:12 Jill Topham playing in her rookie season slammed one past a sprawling Ajax goalie. Ajax got back on the scoreboard at 3:19 when Michele got beat by a hard shot to the top corner. With Port in command and 2:49 left in the game Joan Anderson set up Geni Taylor in- front and "how you like me now" Geni scored her second goal of the game. Ajax scored with 39 seconds left to round the scoring out with Port winning 9-4. Honorable mention for good hustle goes to Jill Topham. Honorable mention for good defensive effort goes to Lea-Ann Wakeford.
