After playing six games in five days and bat- tling the flu bug, the Malmont A's were doing alright. The first period was a see-saw af- fair with both offences having some good chances, but both goalies were coming up with the big save. With the help of a strong de- fence Port goalie Daniel Lee was doing just fine. Port lit up the score board first at 2:36 of the first period when Justin Kowalczyk put a perfect pass on Scott Jeffries stick up the middle to Jeff Ashton who torpedoed one deep into the back of the Lind- say goal to give Port the all important first goal. The first period ended with Port Perry out in front 1-0 over Lindsay. The second peri- od was played mostly in the neutral zone dué to some nice forechecking by both teams. The second period ended with Lindsay holding a one goal lead, 2-1 going into the third period. With a flood scheduled be- tween the second and third pe- riod coach Lee Wilbur and Dex took their team into the dress- ing room for some inspiration- al words and some soul searching by the players. A re- Juvenated Port team came out and took the play right to Lindsay. At 13:13 of the third period Justin Kowalczyk put a nice pass over to Seth Gray over to Dillan Weber and she's all tied up. At 4:56 with Port applying the pressure Troy Campbell hit Seth Gray flying up the middle over to Dillon Weber and up she goes to put Port ahead 3-2. The Road Runner Line of Johnston, Sheehey, VanShag- en, Harper and Lyons was af- ter Lindsay like a dog after a bone. Finally Lindsay put the puck in the Port Perry zone. pulled their goalie for an extra attacker and Dannny Lyons came around his own net up to his own blue line and fired a long shot the full length of the ice into the corner to put the game away once and for all and give Port the win with a final score of 4-2 for Port Perry over Lindsay. Playing in goal for Port Perry was Daniel Lee. Honorable mention for good hustle goes to Danny Lyons. Honorable mention for good defence effort goes to Jeff Ash- ton. A good effort for fore- checking was done by Brad Johnston and Dillan Weber. Nice going guys. Correction. In the champi- onship game in King City, Danny Lyons received the M.V.P. award. Total team ef- fort and disipline is a combina- tion hard to beat. The Malmont Farms Atom hockey Club from Port Perry still on their road trip, trav- elled down the 401 to take on the Junior Cougars in Co- bourg. This game started quickly, just 12 seconds into the game, when Cobourg won the draw, carried it into the Port Perry zone, into the cor- ner around the net, out to the face-off circle, over to a wait- ing centreman at the side of the net and thank you very much it's 1-0 for Cobourg. At this point Port turned up the heat a crank, but two goal posts and one crossbar later was too much. Port had the puck bouncing their way but couldn't jam it home. Cobourg. turned things around Port's goalie Corey Branton had to make a few good saves to keep Port in the game when Cobourg had them hemmed in their own zone at the 5 minute mark. With the first period ticking away, Adam Jones stole the puck in Cobourg Country in the slot to Scott Jeffrey, back to the point to Derek Lindall who slammed a hard wrist shot past the goalie on his glove side to tie the game at the 2:08 mark. The horn sounded to end the first period with Port and Co- bourg tied at one. The second period opened in a hurry with the line of Gray, Weber, Campbell and Kowalc- zyk playing short handed, throwing the puck around the Cobourg zone well. With a tic, tac, toe passing play into the slot to Seth Gray and another goal post and another close but no cigar outing. Both of- fences came alive giving the goalies something to think about in the line of quality shots. The second period end- ed scoreless making the score one all after two periods of play. At the 14:20 mark of the third period Scottie Harper put a nice pass over to Casey VanShagen, up to Dillan We- ber over to Troy Campbell, who hit VanShagen flying up the middle. beat the defence, hit the post again and off comes the net for another nice try outing. The next shift Seth Gray let a cannon go, off the goalies shoulder, off the cross- bar, off the glass for another try chalked up to Friday the 13th. At the 10 minute mark Cobourg had Port bottled up in their own end pretty good, ay 4-2 forcing the Port goalie to come up with three good saves be- fore Cobourg slammed one home at 10:36 to give Cobourg the lead 2-1. Port tried to press but Co-' bourg was up to the challenge, matching Port stride for stride. With time ticking away, Port pulled their goalie at the one minute mark for an extra attacker. With 21 sec- onds left in the game Cobourg got an empty netter to put the game out of reach and the scoreboard reading home 3, Port Perry 1. Shots on goal were 26 for Cobourg and 24 for Port Perry. Port played a disiplined game with only mi- nor penalties. Honorable mention for good hustle goes to Derek Lindall. Honorable mention for good defencive effort goes to Justin Kowalczyk. Dillan Weber gave it his best shot despite playing with a pair of sore knees. Port played a good disiplined game and total team effort !"" Nice try guys.
