In addi- tion to her achievements in the peer tutor course, Shari also donates time to the School Ambassador pro- gram where she works with the Alive and Well group. Shari has two part-time jobs and still managed to achieve an 84 per cent over- all average on her Novem- ber report card. Gord Mills to be part of Legislative and Regulation Committee as of Jan. 1 By Gord Mills MPP Durham East From December 9 until the Christmas break, the Legislature will be in session daily until mid- night. When we heard this last week some members heaved a heavy sigh. The bright spot is that January follows, and the Commit- tees are not scheduled to com- mence until the week of January 13. In January, I will be leaving the Justice Committee to join the Legislative and Regulations Com- mittee. Our task will be to bring about changes in the conduct of business both in the Legislature and in Committee. The aim is to introduce now rules aimed at making business run smoother and perhaps more amiable. I will also join the Preoincts Committee which formulates policy in the day-to-day running of the Legislature. We are also tasked with coming to grips with the essential repairs and alternations to the "Pink Palace" which is showing signs of decay. Last week, I was honored to have the opportunity to speak to both Durham Regional Council . and the Newcastle Town Council on the occasion of their Inaugural Council Meetings. The Inaugural Council Meeting is an exciting time, and for those who ex- perience it for the first time, it is a special time in their life. I'm looking forward to working close- ly with all the new members of Regional Council, Newcastle; Council, Scugog Council, and the Township of Manvers. I couldn't get to the Inaugural Local man to appear in court A Blackstock man will ap- pear in court Jan. 9 in connec- tion with a traffic fatality on Canada Day. Neil McLaughlin of Black- stock has been charged with op- erating an unsafe vehicle under section 67 of the Highway Traf- ficAct. Melanie Harris, 14, of Poplar Park Crescent in Victorian Vil- lage, was killed when her bicy- cle was struck by a water truck at the corner of Highway 7A and Crandell Street in Port Perryonduly 1, 1991. WEST 1aANgroRTATION BY REQUEST Council Meeting of Scugog Coun- cil, or of Manvers Township, however 1 did send my good wishes to all council members and to the mayor and reeve respectively. I intend to continue my cordial relationship with all elected officials, and to continue to share information, with a high degree of candor and openness. We all face difficult times ahead, transfer payments to municipalities, grants to schools and hospitals, no doubt will have to be trimmed. However, in a spirit of co-operation I'm sure we will pull through this worst reces- sion in the history of Ontario. On Thursday, Financial Institu- tions Minister Brian Charlton delivered to the Legislature a reform package on auto in- surance which is both comprehen- sive and innovative. '"The Road Ahead" provides the people of On- tario with the most generous and equitable accident benefits in Canada. It keeps auto insurance premiums affordable, allows more people to sue for pain and suffering - and puts safety in the forefront for the insurance in- dustry, government and the public. The decision by the government not to proceed with public auto insurance did not put aside the responsibility to ensure Ontario drivers are better served by the auto insurance system. On Friday evening, my staff and I marked the end of the week long White Ribbon Campaign against violence against women, by handing out leaflets and white ribbons in Bowmanville. All of us must join in stopping violence against women, until it is no more. ' Until next week - be kind to each other and feel better. PET OF A This week's Pet of the Week is a black border collie-sheltie Cross. This female is approximately one-year-old and was found on Old Scugog Road.
