ht a J wi HEEL 16 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 17, 1991 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Tigers win first place in One Act Plays competition Blac kstoc by Joyce Ke Last Sunday Harold and Ei- leen Mclaughlin, Roy and Edith McLaughlin along with Ross and Jean Ashton of Bow- manville travelled to Niagara Falls where they visited the funeral parlours to pay re- spects to Phyllis McLaughlin wife of Ray McLaughlin. Ray is a first cousin of Roy, Harold and Jean. There were 17 tables at the Christmas euchre on Tuesday evening with the following winners: Violet Linton, Do- reen Ferguson, Doris Hill, Dorothy Bray, Jean Porrill, Charlie Campbell and Doris Evans. Lucky draws were won by : Meta Swain, Doreen Fer- guson, Nerta Masters, Fred Grifen, Bernice Wells, Muriel Butson and Margaret Wright. There were poor crowds at both evenings of one act plays presented by the students of Cartwright High School on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. On Thursday eve- ning the two plays (the caste of the third play were sick and unable to present it). The best actor was Kirk Swain, the best actress was Jill VanCamp, best supporting actor was Chris Espey and best support- ing actress was Heather Goulding and Michelle Morton received the adjudicators' prize for runner-up supporting actress. The play "I Love You Truly" won first place for the Tigers while the Alikats pro- duction "A Separate Peace" came second. Mrs. Schaad of Nova Scotia is visiting her daughter Ingrid and David Larmer and grand- sons Robert and Stephen. Afternoon Unit of U.C.W. Audrey Wright conducted a Christmas worship of inspirational read- ings interspersed with carol singing led by Jean Ferguson. The roll call was "Something I Enjoy about Preparations for the Christmas Season." busi- ness included the reading of the minutes by Secretary Dora Martyn and plans to serve lunch to the Soil and Crop Im- rovement on January 10. A ovely variety was enjoyed as each member contributed a Christmas number for the pro- gram. Meeting closed with a benediction by Audrey. Glenn and Marion have re- cently returned from a delight- ful trip to the United Kingdom where they visited many points of interest. This trip was a gift from their family on the occasion of their 35th wed- ding anniversary. The Shirley Women's Insti- tute held the Christmas meet- ing at the home of Jim and Hazel Coates in Blackstock. Spouses and family members were also included in this spe- cial meeting which began with a delicious pot luck dinner. The president Muriel Wot- ten responded to the motto - "It is better to give than to re- ceive." The pro- gram included Christ as num- bers by each of the members followed by a cookie exchange. Christmas euchre Friday RIS Utica News by SRA SRR Christmas is fast approach- ing, please note the following festive activities in the com- munity. Friday at 8 p.m. is the spe- cial Christmas euchre to be held in Utica Hall. Sunday Church services will be held in Utica starting at 11 a.m. Pat Asling, who will be home to enjoy the holidays with her family will tell about her mission work in Jamaica and Belise. There will be spe- cial envelopes for anyone who wishes to donate towards her work. The Sunday School will hold their Christmas concert on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. in Ep- spom Church. Parents please bring finger food. There were several compli- ments on the lovely big tree Vera Brown that beautifies the front of the Epsom Church. Thanks to Doug and Judy Taylor for this donation. It reaches almost as high as the ceiling. Christmas Eve service will be held in Utica Church start- ing at 8:45 p.m. Communion will be served. Our sympathy to the Mac- Sween family in the passing of Doug's father Horace Mac- Sween. Doug and Judy flew to Prince Edward Island on the weekend for the services, re- turning home on Wednesday.
