10 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 17, 1991 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" HEE al "Dirty debate" sparks more reponse To the Editor: Congratulations! There's nothing like a good old down and dirty debate to get the old adrenalin flowing, is there? But I stand almighty amazed that Scugog has so many 'special interest' factions zealously pro- moting personal vendettas and anti civil rights causes, not to mention political. Welcome to the Dark Ages, or later, the In- quisition and Auto-De-Fe! Quoting meticulously selected Scripture (in a socie- ty seeing Christianity being rapidly over- run by just about any other "religious" beliefs, including wearing daggers to schools, swastikas to 'swarm,' any in- mate can attempt to lay hold of the institution. So far, fine. The key problem is many "'inmates" are ill-informed, half-in- formed, or uninformed on the sad state of our planet -- and Country -- to-day, both ecologically and demographically. Had heated-up zealots taken a moment's pause before railing about 'God's gifts,' etc., they would know that the human animal, rigorous in its biological urges, is lemming-like overrunning the earth, con- suming the planet's natural resources and literally everything else, while creating unimagineable amounts of detritus for so- meone else to worry about as it backs itself into megalopic corners (cities) where poverty, drug abuse, robbery and murder are not only pandemic, but accepted as commonplace and an everyday fact of life. Like California brushfires, we hasten to Gomorrah. So be it. We are born to die. However, education, knowledge, and common sense are more rational and far better tools than rant, inflamed emotions; and misguided manipulations of those members of the public whose opinion dares to differ from the faction-pronounced "right" view. Would that the righteous could travel widely, as I have, and see the damage wrought by much of to-day's overabundant humankind, especially on the wild kingdom (put here, of course, just for our use) and in once-lovely cities (such as Lima, Peru, or Mexico City). Where they could also see at close hand abused, ever-pregnant females with short life spans, dead eyes, and little hope of rais- ing 'one more mouth' to maturity -- but the macho necessity keeps them trying -- and thereby forever enthralled and controlled. And would they come see the teeming children of the Orient, born into sub-teen prostitution, or the girls as child-brides to often brutal "owners" in North America. All this is a written book that has no end -- yet. And Mother Theresas are in short supply to save the already living. Interestingly enough, many would-be saviours of society often fit into disturbing patterns: anxious, hypochondriacal, com- pulsive, socio-repressive, peremptory, omnipotent-delusive, pugnacious, despotic, oligarchic, and sometimes even demoniacal (Cotton Mather, historically, or Judge Bean, to name two). No one of these patterns has much concern for so- called 'human rights." Why, 'in God's name,' do they not preach abstinence, wisdom, maturity, common sense, even 'safe sex?' Why sacrosanctly assume that every microscopic gelatinous egg must of necessity meet up with an aggressive sperm to swell into more protoplasm? (Note the recent 'Vanity Fair' cover featuring a profoundly gibbous Demi Moore which provoked such a screech amongst sin-chasers). Ani why should we arrogantly presume the planet is needful of ever swelling numbers of our own in- dividual clones? We in Canada live in a so called democratic society with more "rights" than we know what to do with anyway. What happened to the right of ra- tional choice --- to walk to the grocery store and not be mugged by someone's 'God- given' but dissatisfied protoplasm, or to say no and not be raped to breed some misfit's progency according to 'divine will,' or, or, or.... So, to Katie -- ""Whooptie-do,"' '"'we all have the freedom to do anything we wish" - DO we? To Brenda -- had I "been aborted," would I even be here to care? What a specious argument. Would we need a cure for AIDS if humankind were not so hormone-driven, self-involved, and in many cases, just plain promiscuous (note the contemporary athletes who claim to have "had" thousands of females)? And what about the unnumbered little fetuses destined to become 'Charlies' (Manson, Eng., etc.) or Adolfs (Hitler) or Saadams -- more or, or, or's -- humankind is the on- ly species which historically and deter- minedly destroys what it produces; case in point, look at BOTH sides in the recent Gulf War. Some miracle! But we ladies keep on producing more cannon fodder, per 'divine right." Where would wars be without it? To Vic (name first, of course) and Bren- da -- would you really WANT the unborn to 'stand up?" To Pastor David -- your in- tent was "not to argue, but in a sane and calm way argue....???"" To Mrs. Marty -- there is change indeed, and some "frantic men," abetted by subject and adoring women, still find encouragement in evading equality and thumping the odd chest in self-satisfaction. To K.E. -- me too! Not only am I an- ticipating Pamphlet Vol. Two, but also Volume One A -- you know, the one which graphically depicts sexual encounters, dif- ferent positions, etc., etc. Could even become a best seller and fund raiser for busy promoters of human activities. And Volume Three -- perhaps with some full color spreads of mouldering bones of tiny rape victims, located long after the fact while anquished parents searched in vain for months. Some of our prospective deviates could use a few good 'how-to' manuals. (Or do we infringe on the Kama Sutra)? To Lorraine -- something seems to be happening with the manipulation of the word 'Liberal' -- how can you argue for uni- ty and progressive thinking, yet pro- mulgate dissension and fundamentalism? We will never get this country saved from that human being 'of intrinsic value," B. Mulroney, unless we pull together, not apart. Head back to your Bible: 'if a house be divided against itself, that house can- not stand" (N.T. Mark III, 25). To Mr. Kirkham -- I, too, would like to know "what the hell is going on with (my expensive) post office boxes' which ap- parently the current government can in- filtrate with any old recyclable material it chooses to dragoon the unsuspecting, un- willing, unaddressed, and overtaxed householder with -- and not even be per- sonally labelled. To Saundra -- you got that right! Fanatics do indeed use emotional issues to insidiously further their causes, almost always male-dominated ('20's Temperance protesters excepted) and " anti-equality). (Ah, would that we all could be protected little hearthsiders with nur- 7 Dress to Impress! Our careful attention to even the smallest details makes a big difference in the way you look. Bring in your cleaning order and see the difference yourself. ~ turing, wage-earner husbands. We could successfully go on procreating ourselves clear out of a habitat and off a planet, couldn't we)? But, politics and personal prejudices are oil and water. I too, a fifty- year Liberal, despair for the current par- ty unless we return to sanity and in- telligence, fairness and personal ethics, eschewing zealotism and petty wrangling. And to busy Carol: First 'set thine (own) house in order (O.T. 2 Kings VIII, 13 and Isaiah XXXVIII, 1). Evangelism may be a truly wonderful thing, but let's be sure the savee needs -- or even wants -- to be saved. Let us not forget the Swag- garts and the Bakers of this continent. Motives for overheated protestation can be powerfully suspect indeed. Bookburners take note. Lastly, to all you mightily abused colum- nists out there, the Star and John James included, and the public at large, I too am for that "even playing field," the right to "informed dissent," the need for equanimity and some humor in these tenuous, self-interested times. Keep up the forum, keep it balanced, keep it coming. (I will judiciously avoid railing at this time against current abuses of our mailing system in general, and junk mail in par- ticular). But when I read about the murders of fourteen young prospective (female) engineers, or more recently (and almost locally -- Bancroft) the repeated raping of a young (female) steel-wire- garrotted hound dog by some enthusiastic gentlemen, it does leave me wondering just who has the "right to life." "(King Soloman loved many strange women" (1 Kings X1, 1) -- even the Devil can quote Scripture to his own purposes). Yours in a tad cynical bemusement, Diane Lackie, *Postscript: I am not given, as some in our community diligently are, to firing off let- ters to the editor, but there must be a place somewhere for a voice of reason. However, "of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh (Ecclesiastes X11, 11 O.T.); ""all flesh is grass' (Isaiah XL, 6, 0.T.) anyway. Let's 'hope the factions shall "see eye to eye" (Isaiah L11, 8, O.T.) and not keep trying to be "holier than thou" (Isaiah LXV, 5, 0.T). (All quotes from the King James Version of the Holy Bible).
