Shows with confidence. by Michael Evans With elections and other such Autumn diversion whirling about, | left you hanging rather abruptly a few weeks ago. In my last article | identified some consid- erations you need to make when purchas- ing a computer. | suggested that you go into the purchase armed with certain infor- mation. The categories of information you should end up with are: The type of microprocessor your require: This is the computer chip that acts as the heart of your computer and the part generally responsible for its rela- tive cost. Generally the faster and more efficient the microprocessor, the greater its cost. but faster, more advanced micro- processors also are capable of doing fan- cier things. The type and amount of informa- tion storage desired. Hard disk drives are virtual necessity these days along with floppy disk drives. Don't scrimp here! The integrity of your information is what this is all about, after all! Get as large a hard disc capacity as you can afford. You will also have to decide what size floppy disks you will be using. For IBM compatible machines, | recommend you get both 3.5" and 5.25" size disk drives. The amount of memory you will need. This refers to the amount of infor- mation the computer can handle at one time once it is turned on. Some of the newer software programs require relative- ly large amount of memory. But you can still find programs that may suit you that do not require very much memory at all. Since this has become a relatively inex- pensive additional cost, | would again rec- ommend getting as much as you can afford. As the maxim goes, there are two things a computer user can never get enough of: memory and disk space. (You may wish to add your own items to this list, but you get the point.) The kind of screen you want to look at. Ask yourself if a color display is necessary. It isn't for most work process- ing or data manage-ment tasks. But you may feel that since you will be spending a great deal of time in front of the screen, it had better be easy on your eyes. The kind of printer you require. Who will be looking at your printed work? Do you need letter quality or publisher quality? Or are you mostly printing out sheets of numbers? You can easily make the output of a very inexpensive computer look positively spectacular with a more expensive printer. We'll talk more specifi- cally about printers in a future column. Prior to making your purchase, you might consider taking an introductory { or community college. There are a | number of very basic courses designed { for new computer users that include { extensive discussion about purchasing { decisions. Avoid paying a great deal for { lengthy courses, however. | strongly rec- { ommend to my own computer students | that they save their money and put it into | the computer, not another course. computer course at the local high Solio) Once you've bought your computer and started to use it, you'll know more clearly whether further courses are neces- sary for you. Regardless of your source ef advice, though, the process is is always the same: First define what you want the computer to do, Second, evaluate your learning needs. Third, establish your finances. Let the first two steps guide your actual purchase decision. Of course you don't want to over- extend yourself financially. but | have seen many people end up with a real bar- gain that can't do what it was purchased to do, or, equally bad, a monster machine that is used to type letters and keep the softball league's statistics. And where should you purchase your computer? There are a couple of guide- lines here. Above all, make sure the com- pany with whom you choose to deal has been in business for some time and has a proven repair department. You may also wish to deal with staff who will install the equipment for you. | would not recom- mend purchasing from an outfit that isn't prepared to service e what it sells or offer you an attractive (e.g, one year) warranty. Be sure to ask whether the store provides computers on loan if your has to be returned for repair. The dealer | use also knows a lot about different software package. This way, | can insure that my system is optimized for virtually any use | require. . | would caution you to select a dealer whose sales staff is willing to support you, not overwhelm you. good companies understand most users need information presented in clear, non-condescending manner. | also find that good sales people tend to stick around in good companies. Ask he sales person how long she or he' has worked in that store. Computer stores are no place for pressure sales people! If you feel pressured, LEAVE! Explain to the salesperson that you have spent considerable time making your decision. Present your list. Should the sales person suggest additional or alter- nate equipment, listen but make sure the suggestions make sense to you. If they don't, consider leaving the store to talk with your "consultant." The point to all this is to insure that you arrive home or back at the office feel- ing good about your purchase. After all, this thing has got to work for you, not against you.
