Douro tournament summary: Game one, began Friday even- ing with Port facing a big St. Paul's team from Peterborough. Just after one minute of play, goalie Paul Shrigley made his first of many big saves but left a loose puck sitting on his door step that St. Paul quickly popped in. Port came right back with a goal by Justen Halligan assisted by Danny Robinson resulting from a scramble in front of the net. Port's second goal came off a nice pass from Jason Hopkins to Kevin Gray who shot it high into the net. Assists went to Hopkins and Bob- by Cracknell. Second period action was a repeat of the first with St. Paul finally tying up the game with some sloppy defense by Port in front of their own net. Third period saw some heavy hitting by Smith, Gray and Shanley and a very big save by Shrigley to keep it tied up but fell behind on a goal resulting again from Port's failure to clear the loose puck in the goal crease. Kevin Gray came back quickly with his second goal assisted by Jamie Strickert. With the game tied at four apiece, Port was call- ed for a questionable holding penalty and despite many fine saves by Shrigley, St. Paul scored on the power play adding another into the empty net for a disappoin- ting loss of 6-4. A costly penalty but a great game guys. Game two took place Saturday morning against an even bigger Northminster team with Kent Johnston in net for Port. Nor- thminster scored quickly but Port answered back with a goal by Jamie Strickert assisted by Kristan Wootton. Northminster's second goal resulted from a tip-in py Port's aetence ending tne period 2-1. The second period saw some nice hustle from Robinson, Wootton, Shanley and Strickert left them behind five goals to one. Third period saw a very ag- gressive Northminster team con- tinually maul goalie Johnston with Kent coming up with some big saves and the game ended 6-1 for Northminster. Game three was played Satur- day afternoon against Peter- borough's St. Alphonsus team...and their guys keep get- ting bigger and bigger. Both teams played a slower, hard hit- ting period and looked well mat- ched until St. Alphonsus caught goalie Paul Shrigley with an unex- pected shot from a back angle with Port having a man in the penaity box ending a cautious period at 1-0. The second period was another story with Port allowing St. Alphonsus to skate in unchecked forcing Shrigley to make numerous saves throughout the period but with little help from his team, St. Alphonsus finally scored on a quick high shot with players shoving each other in front of Port's goal with Shrigley having no chance to see it. Kevin Gray stormed right back 20 seconds later with a great solo effort that finally got Port on the scoreboard. The third period saw St. Alphonsus score the dragon-killer when Port had a man advantage. They went on to score two more to end the game at 5-1, but this game could have been a romp ex- cept for a great performance by the Port goalie. Game four, after three tough losses in Doura, the Scugog Overhead Doors Pee Wee 'B's" rushed back for a Saturday even- ing league game in Port Perry against Uxbridge. That old Ux- bridge rivalry was evident right from the drop of the puck as both teams went hard at it with Port handing out some major body checks by Gray, Shanley, Cracknell, Gracie, Laird, Levy and Smith. Port drew first blood on a face- off play to the right of the Ux- bridge goal. Jason Hopkins pick- ed up the puck and put it high in- to the net assisted by Aaron Levy. With just over two minutes left in the. first, Port took a roughing penalty and Uxbridge tied it up on a screened shot that Kent Johnston had no chance on. Both goalies were exceptional with an exciting fast period ending in a 1-1 tie. Canadian Both teams kept up the same pace with end to end action and midway through the period, Dan- ny Robinson roared down left wing all alone and after taking a vicious slash, went in to score an unassisted and well deserved goal. That play really inspired Port even more with a third goal by Kevin Gray assisted by Bobby Cracknell and their fourth goal by Shane Norton assisted by Danny Robinson and Justen Halligan. When you're hot, you're hot; and there was no stopping these guys in the third period with Shane Norton scoring his second of the game off a neat pass from Matt Baxter. Uxbridge got on the scoreboard one more time but Port scored their sixth goal by Justen Halligan on a great pass across ice by Shane Norton. Port won 6-2 completing their fourth game in 24 hours. A big, big win from a bunch of very tired guys. Game five, a very exhausted group of parents showed up at Manvers on Sunday evening with an eager crew of players to do the final round of battle in a league game with a very tough Manvers team. It was a fast hard hitting game but five games in 48 hours was just too much for Port and Manvers went on to win 6-1. Port's only goal came from Kristan Wootton assisted by Jamie Strickert. Honorable men- tion goes to Matt Baxter and Aaron Levy for some great body checking. A very valiant effort from a very tired team. Midget B team | defeat Sunderland Sunderland Midgets provided the opposition for the Canadian Tire team in Port Perry on Wednesday, Nov. 6, Port Perry. The first period was uneventful but the pace really picked up in the second. The home town team found the mark just seconds into the period when Lindsay Parry followed through on a nice play set up by Noah St. Amond and Jason Coutoulakis. The Port team was playing shorthanded when Sunderland capitalized to notch their lone goal. Jason set up a beautiful play right from the face-off and Michael Williams fired the re- bound in. Two more goals in the second were scored by Louis Whitfield from Jason, and Todd Smart from Scott Wylie. Steve Desautels scored the only goal in the third period with Mark Cosway and Scott Airey assisting. Mike Tripp was between the pipes and had to make several tricky saves to hold the score down, but the defense kept the op- KINSMEN HALL Admission For information call: SPORTS CARD SY\GOXN 15585 Simcoe St.Port Perry Nov. 17, 1991 - 11 AM. - 4 PM. This was a fast paced game with the opposition capitalizing on some mistakes to score three goals in the first for a 3-0 lead. In the second period both teams played some fine hockey but un- fortunately for Port, the Black Hawks scored three more for a 6-0 lead. Give credit to our boys who never gave up and played the op- position even in the third with each team scoring one goal.
