(ea The Port Perry Star 985- 7383 Transport Minister visit to Scugog still not set By Scott Anderson " There still has been no date set for the visit by Ontario's Transportation minister to come to Scugog to look into the traffic problems of the munici- pality first hand. Mayor Howard Hall told council in early September that Transportation Minister Gilles Pouliot would be coming to Scu- gog to investigate traffic con- cerns especially along the causeway. But last Wednesday Mayor Hall told the Star that he has yet to hear from the min- ister's department concerning the visit. The municipality had writ- ten to the minister's office in the middle of the summer ex- pressing its concerns over traf- fic on the causeway including the parking and fishing situa- tion and also the speed limit. In the letter it pointed out two se- rious accidents on the Canada Day weekend, which resulted in the death of one young girl. In a letter addressed to Gord Mills, Durham East M.P.P., K.B. Maynard, Head of the Traffic Section for the Depart- ment of Transportion, told Mr. Mills that as the problem re- lates primarily to fishing in the area, the ministry will review possible courses of action with the Ministry of Natural Re- sources. Mr. Maynard suggested that a joint effort between the minis- tries, as well as the Township of Scugog be explored "in an at- tempt to address the concerns." Council was also requesting that the speed limit along the causeway be reduced. It is cur- rently 80 km/h. But the minis- try rejected this request. Mr. Maynard explained that it is "appropriate in terms of highway geometrics, adjacent development and driver expec- tation." He added that a lower speed limit would not result in lower speeds, and could give pe- destrians "a false sense of se- curity." To possibly avoid further pe- destrian accidents along the causeway, Mr. Maynard said pedestrian advance warning signs would be erected at each end of the causeway. He says these signs, yellow and black in color with the representation of a pedestrian walking, should alert motorists to the fact that there may be pedestrians in the area. As of Monday afternoon. these signs were yet to be in- stalled. Forder-Parks Insurance Brokers Inc. G.1.C. SEU OANK Porconal attention to all of your general insurance needs.
