They'll check out the con- dition of the burner, fan, circulating pump, and so on. You may also want to ask them to give you an ef- ficiency rating on your system. If it's time for your furnace to receive a good cleaning, make sure you book an appointment. If you have any exposed insulation in your base- ment, it's a good idea to check it thoroughly for dampness. An indication of condensation, damp in- sulation should be re- moved and replaced, and the source of condensa- tion (such as sweating pipes) should be dealt with. Doors While examining the basement, also be sure to check the seal around any exterior doors in the base- ment. Like the windows, these should have proper weatherstripping and caulking to cut down on heat loss. You can also in- stall a doorsweep to cut down on drafts seeping in under the door. To save on energy costs, Al Ss ome top to bottom you may want to consider insulating your hot water tank by installing a pro- tective wrap. This should increase the efficiency of your tank. However, make sure you consult your utility company first to see what types of mate- ridls you should or shouldn't use. Also exam- ine the water heater and pipes for signs of leakage or deterioration. Other Floors Once you've finished checking the basement, you should carefully in- spect doors and windows on the other floors of your home to make sure drafty areas won't overtax your heating system and your budget. If some windows tend to be a real problem in terms of heat loss -- or if you're lacking a storm window -- you can buy special kits at the hardware store. These kits contain plastic sheets which can be made to fit most windows when heat from a hairdryer is applied. The only draw- back is that you can't open the windows once you've sealed them with plastic. If you have a forced air heating system, youll prohavly want to give the eat registers a thorough cleaning. This can be done by removing the metal register and vacuuming it and/or wiping it off. While you have the register out, check the top of the heat- ing duct for accumula- tions of dust. If you have a hot water system with convectors, you'll have to remove the protective metal casing. Wipe the inside of the cas- ing off and vacuum up dust around the fins and pipes. ~ Cast iron radiators can be gently wiped with a damp cloth to remove dust. You may want to use a yardstick to gently push the cloth into hard-to- reach parts of your radia- tors. You'll also want to re- lease any build-up of air in your convectors or radi- ators. Carefully open up the valve at the end of the unit and at the first sign of any water escaping, SUCCESS INC. Chimneys and Attic If you have fireplaces or wood burning stoves, be sure to check the chim- neys to make sure they are clean. It's a good idea to hire a professional chimney sweep once a year to conduct a thor- ough cleaning. It's also a good idea to double check the ventila- tion in your attic to make sure you don't have a build-up of moisture. In- adequate ventilation and excessive moisture can ruin insulation and even- tually lead to more seri- ous damage in the house. There are many other items you may want to check around your home to make sure it provides "peak performance" this fall and winter. Consult the appropriate experts for more information.
