By Gillian Barfoot Rod Couch won first place at a rodeo recently, but he wasn't riding a bucking bronco. He was operating a backhoe. When Mr. Couch and his family, who live in Greenbank, attended the Case-sponsored family day in Rexdale on Sept. 7, they weren't planning on en- tering the Loader/Backhoe ro- deo. But Mr Couch's wife, Car- ol, a hair-stylist, decided to enter the ladies' event, so Mr. Couch decided to compete in the rodeo as well. There were 162 people from Ontario competing in the men's rodeo event, says Mr. Couch. Each competitor had to com- plete three timed activities, each of which were designed to test an operator's skill on the backhoe controls. The first exercise was to pick up three pails, using a hook loosely hanging from the end of the bucket, and move them to different places. The second exercise was to drop a ball fastened to a rope into a narrow pipe. A thin opening along the side "of the pipe allowed the operator to pull the rope along the pipe, so when the ball caught at the other end it lifted the pipe up- side down, enabling it to be car- ried to another location and placed on a pylon. The final exercise was to car- ry two balls, which were fas- tened to each end of a rope at different lengths, and set them in opposite corners of a box with a tic tac toe pattern. Then the exercise was to be repeated for another box. The activities were compli- cated by the fact that the hook which was used to pick up and carry the different items was attached to a circle of wire which was hanging loosely on one of the bucket's toothless time by one second. shanks.
