Wagon § "Turn around in Ontario not as quick as we'd like," Rae By Julia Dempsey Trust and understanding: That's what Premier Bob Rae says is needed if Ontario's econ- omy is to be renewed. The premier was the guest speaker at the Durham Region Manufacturer's Association luncheon in Oshawa on Thurs- day. "It does not appear as the turn around (in the economy) in Ontario is going to be as quick as we would like," he told about 500 regional business leaders and local politicians. Unemployment and interest - rates are up, while provincial revenues from sales taxes and personal income taxes are down. The state of the economy is "the worst any of us in this room have seen in our working lives," the premier said. The problem will not be re- solved any quicker by bickering back and forth, he added. "The business community has had some bad things to say about us (the NDP) during the past year," he said, adding he and the nation's leader, Brian Mulroney, have never had any- thing good to say about one an- other. Ontario and the country as a whole will "go to hell in a hand basket" if the fighting contin- ues, he said. "There is too damn much con- frontation in this province and in this country as a whole," the premier added. Premier Rae used two fight- ing deers as an example, stat- ing that if their antlers become caught and they can't get them unhooked, both deer will even- tually die. "We must work together a part of the same team. It's a tall order butit has tobe done." As for the premier, he says he "Carpet experts specializing a 52] Ontario Premier Bob Rae was the guest speaker at the Durham Region Manufacturer's Association luncheon on Thursday. "I think all politicians should follow that advice as well," the premier said. in old fashioned friendly service" Premier Rae stated that his solutions are not the complete answer to renewing Ontario's economy. "I don't know all the an- swers," he admitted. "If anyone out there has any magic solu- tions, please tell me."
