rT ~~... 16 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 24, 1991 Meals on Wheels celebrates 20 years of service in Scugog Three days a week, Commu- nity Care volunteers hit the road to deliver hot noon-hour lunches to 30 Scugog Township residents. The program is Meals on Wheels and it's been a tradition in Scugog Township for 20 years. _ Its premise is to deliver nour- ishing dinners to people who, by reason of age, special needs or illness, are temporarily or permanently unable to prepare their own meals. October 25, 1971 marked the first Meals on Wheels delivery, when volunteers took dinners to five Port Perry residents. That first delivery was made possible through the efforts of Judy McColl, Jerry Jackman, numerous Scugog residents and local service clubs. For the first seven years, the Community Nursing Home food services staff prepared the meals. In 1978, when the de- mand increased for the service, the Community Memorial Hos- ital food services staff came on oard. Scugog Community Care was formed in that year, and when asked to take over the organiza- tion of the Meals on Wheels pro- gram, Community Care agreed. At present, the program serves 30 meals to people in Port Perry, Prince Albert, Blackstock, Nestleton, Caesar- ea and the Seagrave- Greenbank area on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays (in- cluding holidays). The program would not be possible without the combined efforts of Scugog Community Care, the Port Perry Nursing Home, the Community Memo- rial Hospital and the dedicated volunteer drivers.
