By Janet Banting Waste Reduction Week Co-ordinator Ontario's province-wide Waste Reduction Week is coming up fast! Events planned for Scugog Township to emphasize this year's theme **The Future is R's" are really shaping up. Local high school students have a very busy week planned. Two classes will be taking a super- market tour designed to show how we can learn to shop with waste reduction in mind. Another group will be touring the Scugog Transfer Station, Durham Recycling Centre, and Brock West landfill site. Seeing a huge dump site is sure to leave an im- pression on these young people about the real magnitude of our garbage problem! Both Scugog Memorial Library and the municipal office on Perry St. will host displays throughout Waste Reduction Week with ex- cellent handouts for people look- ing for tips on how to cut down on garbage. Other events planned include an information session with Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Composting on Tuesday, October 1 at 7:15 p.m. at Waste Reduction Week 1 is fast approaching Scugog Memorial Library, and a Supermarket Tour geared at teaching waste reduction shopp- ing strategies at 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday, October 2 at the IGA on Queen St. All interested members of the public are welcome to attend these events. Waste Reduction Week is an event that all sectors of the com- munity - government, business, and volunteer - can and should become involved in. In Scugog Township, teachers, members of the local Chamber of Commerce, and the leaders of many youth groups have been contacted with suggestions for the week. If On- tarians are to reduce our waste by 50 per cent in the next nine years, we will all have to learn more about the 3R's! The Recycling Council of On- tario - the non-profit group that has been the real push behind waste reduction in our province since 1978 - is challenging us all to a "Zero Garbage Day" on Wednesday, October 2. Try not to generale any garbage on that day - and not by saving it for another day. It might not be easy, but it is possible. If you have no idea how, be sure to take part in Waste Reduction Week, then you'll have a better idea of how it can be done! Community News Ideas? Stedmans works hard for you!
