According to Michael Erd- man, GM's vice president of marketing, dealers have sold almost 10 per cent more Cava- liers so far in the 1991 model year than during the 1990 mod- el year. Overall, General Motors of Canada dealers delivered 30,334 vehicles in Am 1991, down 10.9 per cent from the 34,051 vehicles delivered in August 1990, Mr. Erdman re- ported. Total passenger car and truck sales so far in the 1991 calendar year were 313,170, a decrease of 3.7 per cent from 325,071 vehicles in the same period last year. Truck deliveries were down 16.5 per cent in August, total- ling 9,924 compared to 11,886 sold in August last year. The truck sales in 1991 from Janu- ary to August were 100,021, down 7.4 per cent from 108,036 for the same period in 1990. Passenger cars fared better, down 7.9 per cent in August 1991 when 20,410 were sold, compared to 22,165 in August 1990. Total car sales for 1991 totalled 213,158, down only 1.8 per cent from 217,035 in 1990. Mr. Erdman acknowledged that consumer confidence in the economy is lagging, howev- er he expects it to improve as the 1992 model year approach- es, when GM introduces "one of the largest lineups of new cars and trucks in its history, as well as the Canadian launch of Saturn and Geo products and a new line of Pontiac impart models." This Fall, take time to get your car ready for winter driving! This year, don't be one of those people whose car fails them on the first cold morning. Most car failure can be avoided by basic preventative measures. Use the following checklist for cold weather dependability. / Battery: Isit fully charged? If not either the battery or the charging system may need attention. # Cooling System: Is your antifreeze strong enough to provide protection against freezing? Are belts and hoses 0.k? Are thermostat and pressure cap working like they should? v Engine: Time for a tune-up? The best battery cannot start an engine that needs maintenance. # Oil & Filter: An engine with dirty oil won't turn over as easily on a cold morning. Oil and filter should be changed as part of seasonal service. / Tires: Avoid trouble by going into winter with good tires, properly balanced and aligned. / Brakes: For safe, smooth stopping, check brakes before ice and snow covers roads. / Lights: All lights, including flashers, should be checked, burned out bulbs should be replaced. # Windshield Wipers: Replace worn blades, ideally with winter blades that repel ice and snow. Keep a spare jug of windshield washer fluid in the trunk. / Inside the Trunk: How's your spare tire? Do you have a jack? A windshield scraper? / Body & Paint: Be sure your car has a good protective coating of wax before the weather turns nasty. This is critical in areas where salt is used for snow removal, because salt is extremely corrosive. The decisive factor between "GO" and "NO GO" in cold weather is usually preventative maintenance.
