Dh a batt "A Family Tradition for 125 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 27, 1991 - 33 Pee Wee MoJacks put in good showing at OASA tourney Port Perry MoJacks Pee Wees travelled to Battersea, north of Kingston to play their OASA championship double knockout tournament this weekend, Aug 24-25. Unfortunately, they suffered another setback when their cat- cher Collin Meijerink suffered a broken ankle while visiting friends in Cobourg on Thursday, Aug. 22. This resulted in three regular players not playing and left Port with only ten players. On Saturday, Aug. 24, their first game was at 9 a.m. in Invenary against a strong team from Town- send (near Hagersville) and Matt Kay took the mound. Port started the top of the first inning with the first run when Ian Shrigley drove Craig Laird home with a single, and at the end of the first we left two runners on base. Townsend scored three runs in the first to go ahead three to one. In the second neither team scored and Matt Kay retired the side with two strike outs and Townsend also struck out three batters and walked Jason Haliburton leaving the score 3-1 after two innings. In the third inning Port scored after Jay King had a double and again lan Shrigley scored Jay on a solid single and Ian was left at second making the score 3-2 for Townsend. Townsend unfor- tunately had a big inning in the third inning when they scored six runs, due to some errors by Port and in this inning Townsend scored four runs with two out and sent ten batters to the plate. After three innings were ahead 9-2. Bill Zaparanuik started the fourth inning when he had a single and scored again when lan Shrigley brought him home on a single. Jason Haliburton was walked and was unable to reach home along with Ian Shrigley and again Port left two runners on base. In the fourth inning Townsend did not score when Port's defen- sive inside made two outs at se- cond base and Matt Kay struck one out leaving one batter on base. After four innings Town- send was ahead 9-3. Port's Ian Shrigley started off the fifth inning with a single and was left on base when the next three batters were out with two springtime Saturday night? Nope. durance car race. From Corner Five by John *Wally' Nesbitt It looked like a scene from Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. Banged, bent and broken cars sat where their commanders had abandoned them. Bits and pieces of mechanical debris lettered the area. Sunken-eyed men shuffled about, examining the carnage. What was this place? A terrorist target? A movie set? Baghdad on a It was just the aftermath of your average, run-of-the-mill 24-hour en- Mosport Park recently staged such an event and although the post race setting was actually not as gruesome as described above, it ultimate- ly was a true adventure in perseverance and endurance. By combining the forces of the SCCA Escort World Endurance Chal- lenge and the Canadian Firestone Firehawk Series, a total of 58 cars started the marathon with the Dieline/Lobdell Emery Corvette of John Powell Motorsports leading the pack to the green flag. The Powell entry, piloted by David Empringham, maintained the number one position for the first hour but was eventually passed by the season's series points lead- er, Shawn Hendriks in his Bakeracing Corvette. Hendricks and his team- mates were able to build a three lap cushion on the field, but in the 14th hour an electrical problem forced them into the pits, handing the lead back to the Powell team. It was a position that they would not relinquish. This victory marked the first time that the Blackstock-based team had claimed the checkered flag on their home track. "We wanted this race and we got it because we had very good cars and a very good driving crew," Powell explained. ""The Bakeracing cars were faster, but our guys were more consistent." Taking the checkered flag for the Powell team was defending series champion, R.K. Smith who accepted the congratulations for his co-drivers Richard Spenard, David Empringham, Kenny Wilden, Tom Clark, Ken Wallace Jr., and Peter Cunningham. The Protein Food Group Corvette, fronted by Toronto's Kathryn Teasdale was second over the line, six laps in arrears with the Morrison/ Goodyear "Vette one lap back in third. The problem plagued Bakeracing car #4 would up in fourth spot while the second Powell Corvette finished a disappointing fifth. The Powell Corvettes "had been running 1-2 overall for about six hours," sighed a dejected team driver Doug Beatty, "when all of a sudden, with about half an hour to go, something went really wrong with the elec- trics and left us stranded at corner three. All that work for... PIT!" It wasn't all for nothing, Doug. You and all of the other competitors put on a great show and should be proud. A few quick notes from this weekend: It was a seven dollar electrical connector that cost the Bakeracing team and chance of victory. That, and a twenty minute penalty for being pushed to the pits by a teammate's car, instead of waiting for a tow-truck. The race was slowed by a total of nine full-course caution periods, the winning car managing to complete only 746 laps, or about 1835 miles. Of the 58 starters, 36 cars were still running at the finish, more cars than started last year's race. The Endurance Award goes to Rolf Strackersan who raced without a co-driver and managed, in spite of mandatory rest stops, to complete 473 laps before driving home...to Halifax! And finally, the "but Honey, I REALLY Love Racing" Award goes to Montrealer Stephane Veilleux, who, between stints at the wheel of a Volkswagon GTI, found it necessary to leave the track..to get married! She sounds like one understanding woman to me! The next action for the Escort World Challenge will be on August 24 in Denver. Best wishes to the Powell team in their quest for back-to-back victories. strike outs and one fly-out. Town- send scored one run in the fifth making the score 10-3 after five innings. We, the coaching and including the parents, feel this year's MoJacks were a very excellent team and could certain- ly have played in any champion- ship game on any given day. Although they missed the cham- pionship game all team members contributed to the success of the MoJacks. Jason Logan (broken arm), parents Randy and Sharon and Collin Meijerink (broken ankle) and parents Herman and Carol attended Battersea and their support is appreciated. We are very proud to have been a part of this year's team and wish every player the very best in their endeavors. It's back to school and continue your fine efforts on and off the diamond. We also wish to thank out sponsor Mother Jackson's, Port Perry Minor Ball, York- Durham League, the parents for their support, and coaching Ray Zaparanuik, Ralph McCullough and Dave Kay.
