Program is unique Durham College linked to university by televideo By Gillian Barfoot Durham College students will soon be able to sit in on Wilfred Laurier University classes without leaving their own home. Wilfred Laurier University in Waterloo recently joined the college's Durham Alliance for Training and Education (DATE) program, Cheryl Bird, the college's public relations of- ficer, announced on Aug. 8. The universities of York and Trent, as well as Ryerson Poly- technical Institute, offer degree programs at Durham College through the DATE program. However, their classes are all taught at the college. The link with Wilfred Lauri- er is unique due to the univer- sity's long distance "televideo" education, which allows stu- dents to take their classes at home. Professional videos are pro- duced with each of the courses to go along with a handbook and textbook, explained Sandy Hughes, the university's man- ager of part-time studies. These correspondence-type courses are designed so that all a student needs is a VCR. The university also provides the opportunity for students to participate in a teleconference twice a year, providing a direct visual and audio link-up with "the professor for ninety min- utes. Interactive computer soft- ware is also in the process of Correction In the August 13 edition of the Port Perry Star it was re- ported that children at the Pio- neer Day Camp at the Scugog Shores Museum made medi- cine wheels. The children actually made shields, not medicine wheels. The Star regrets any confu- sion this may have caused. Please recycle this newspaper being developed as another as- pect of the teleconferencing. Durham College's role is to provide a centre to allow stu- dents to use its library and classroom facilities, so that tests and exams can be held at the college, said Ms. Hughes. Enrolment figures support these new programs at Dur- ham College. Already, 2,828 students have paid their tuition fee for post-secondary courses, said Ms. Bird. She predicts that, for the first time in the college's histo- ry, the number of students will top the 3,000 mark by the time classes start on Aug. 26. Last year the total enrolment by the start of classes was 2,701. Ms. Bird said the college is intentionally encouraging a high enrolment. "The whole region is expand- ing and in order to meet the needs of the region we feel that we have to expand as well." Although it is unlikely that there will ever be a university in Oshawa, due to its proximi- ty to Toronto and Peterbo- rough, the college hopes to be- come a university centre, she says. : "Our goal is to be able to take the best programs from the best universities and bring them to Durham Region." By providing those courses, the college is offering area resi- dents "the choice of the best of all Ontario," explained Ms. Bird. "They can get a degree without ever leaving Durham Region. "This is our way of getting something even better [than a university ."
