"A Family Tradition for 125 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 13, 1991 - 9 ---- Doreen Kendall and Bill Brock (far right) have paddled up almost $10,000 for the Scugog Shores Museum In the past two years through the Canoe the Nonquon race. During a volunteer corn roast at the museum Saturday evening, the dynamic over-50-and-still-paddiing duo received plaques in recognition of their efforts. Pictured with Mrs. Kendall and Mr. Brock are Scugog councillor Yvonne Christie, museum curator/director Gall Sheridan, and Canoe the Nonquon co- ordinator Joan Scott. Missing from the photo is councillor Marilyn Pearce who also helped co-ordinate the canoe race. Museum hosts barbecue to thank its volunteers The Scugog Shores Museum hosted a volunteer corn roast and barbecue Saturday eve- ning in appreciation of the many hours of work its invalu- able volunteers have contribut- ed over the past year. Two of the volunteers, Do- reen Kendall and Bill Brock, re- ceived special recognition for their efforts. In the past two years, the "over 50 and still paddling" duo has raised nearly $10,000 for the museum in the Cange the Nonquon race. But the modest pair refuses to take the credit they deserve, and instead, pass it on to all the people who sponsored them in the event. "We don't do it for the money raised," Mrs. Kendall said while down-playing the amount. "We do it because we truly love this museum and we want to see that it continues, and continues for our children and their children." Mr. Brock was quick to add that it was Mrs. Kendall who got the two of them involved in CoLDWELL BANKCRQ the raceinitially. "If it wasn't for Doreen it wouldn't have happened," he said. Mrs. Kendall mentioned the idea to Mr. Brock prior to the 1990 race. He went on a week and a half trip to the States and when he came back he found all the paperwork had been done. "We were in business wheth- er Ilikeditor not," he said. The race must be agreeing with the aging canoeists. They have already vowed to try the race again next year in the Just Ducky canoe. And they already have a promotional scheme worked out, although they're not sharing that idea just yet. As for the amount they hope to raise, Mrs. Kendall and Mr. Brock are not sure they can sur- pass the $5,600 they raised this year because of the special cir- cumstances surrounding some of the donations. But one thing is for sure: They will be pounding the pave- ment with fierce intensity while looking for pledges for their beloved museum. COUNTRY LANE REALTY LTD.
