38 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 30, 1991 Busy year for Rep team Taylor Ford Mites season winding down Our Taylor Ford 9-10-year- old 'rep' team has been very busy as the final part of our season winds down. On July 23, the visiting Stouffville team took advantage of errors, walks and timely hits to cap- ture a 6-3 victory. Chris Jones took the pitch- ing loss, giving up three hits while having 12 strike-outs. The bright spots for Port were Mark Richardson's lead-off home run in the second inning and two walks each by Ryan McQuade and Justin Hey- worth. Chris Monsma bravely bounced up after being hit on the face by a pitch, and fortu- nately wasn't seriously hurt. On July 27, our mites partic- ipated in the Simcoe tourna- ment. In our first game against Guelph, we looked much sharper and took a 6-1 victory. Chris Jones got the win with excellent bullpen relief from Justin Heyworth. Between them, only one hit was given up and they had 14 strikeouts. Darryl Dalton was nominat- ed as Port's M.V.P. for the game by the opposition coach- es. Ryan McQuade showed the benefits of some extra batting practise, going two for two with a walk, and Justin Hey- worth chipped in with a triple. Mark R. had two walks and Chris J. had a ground-rule dou- ble. Reid McTaggart and Jus- tin Bigglestone played "tough" defensive ball in the outfield and Michael Verrage did a good job in covering the "hot corner." Our final tournament game was against Bramalea's strong team and they came away eventually with the tourna- ment championship. Their pitching ace, Ryan, mowed down 19 batters throughout the game and by the end of the fifth inning they held a 3-0 lead, thanks to the excellent bunting execution and some of our fielding mis- cues. To our team's credit, howev- er, we batted back with two runs in a big sixth inning with Ryan McQuade and Jeff Ash- ton earning walks and a hard- hit drive through the infield by Chris Jones. Unfortunately, the strong Bramalea team staged their own final inning rally and took advantage of four Port Perry errors for their well-earned victory. Chris Jones had 10 strike- outs in a losing cause and Jus- tin Heyworth relieved in the fi- nal inning. Ryan McQuade was one tor two with a walk and Chris Jones was two for three at the plate. Ryan McQuade was named the team M.V.P. for the game by Bramalea. Scott Cunning- ham, Michael McLennan and Aaron Chambers all played en- thusiastically in the tourna- ment. All in all the tournament was reasonably successful for Port Perry and, with a little better fielding, we might have advanced farther. Catcher Jeff Ashton was named the runner- up tournament All-Star catch- er and was excellent at receiv- ing and throwing to the bases. The next game is an OASA playdown against visiting Co- drington at 6:30 on July 30 at the South Diamond on Water Street. T-ball action The t-ball season is quickly coming to an end with just a month left until the final tour- nament to be played on Friday, August 16 at 6 p.m. at R.H. Cor- nish. It is both interesting and ex- citing to see the improvement from all the players and the in- creased level of competitive- ness as the senior players are proving they are ready to jump up to 7-8 Mites and the younger players showing a better under- ; standing of the game. The outstanding players from the July 23 games were: in game one between Brian's Tow- ing and Mayne Farms Limited Caleb Atkins, David Akerma- nis and Christopher Firlotte starred for Brian's while Made- line Potter, Curtis Hughes and Terry Daly starred for the Farm crew. In Game two Cottrell's Cus- pids and Port Perry Excavating played an exciting and evenly matched game with Shona Tighe, Matthew Virtue and Johnathon Marsh starring for the Ex crew and Ryan Petch, Jeremy Goreski and Nicole Go- reski shining for the Cuspid crew. In game three Leahy's Bob- cat Service met Durward's Driveway Sealing. Another fine effort from the players with Beth Haynes, Gregory Greenough and Jason Redman starring for the Cat crew while Justin Sanders, Marta Van Camp and Kyle Geer with a super effort for the Driveway team, and a great ef- fort from all the players. Cornish ball diamonds. T-Ball action takes place every Tuesday night at the school. News from the tennis courts Last Saturday the Junior Men's and Ladies Doubles Tournament was held at the courts. Eight men's teams entered but nary a woman's team. ' The consolation finals featured Kent Johnston and Rob Murphy winning in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6 over Kevin Pike and Alex Wardley. In the championship match Paul Linton and Drew Car- dinal emerged victorious over Jeff Murray and Chris Linton in 3 sets, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. Many thanks to Rob Johnston who convened the tournament - and we'll get the ladies out next year. ' For the past three weeks many of our energetic youth have been involved in our summer tennis camp. These young people will be demonstrating their newly learn- ed skills during a Junior's Mini Tournament to players 12 years and under this Thursday and Fri- day. For entertainment at the courts come on down either of these two days. You may see some young budding tennis stars. Starting next week, on Tuesday and Thursday mornings Jay Neill will be running a program involv- ing drills and games, for members only, from 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. Competition has been tough in the Kawartha League as our teams battle through it all. The final game of the regular season will be played this Wednesday, when the Port Perry team visits the Peterborough Nautilus team. Play-offs start the week of August 5th. In our Junior division, Adam Johnston has been involved in- many outside tournaments. Adam won the Peterborough "B" Men's Championship on July 7. Another junior, Quinn Sutherland, was defeated in the Ladies Con- solation. J.D. Heffern and Adam played in a Singles Tournament in Sudbury recently. Although both young men didn't reach the finals, they made a fine representation of the Port Perry Tennis Club. Adam also participated in an O.T.A. tournament at Castlemare Tennis Club in Brampton where he reached the quarter finals. On the lighter side of tennis, fundamentals are the boring repetitive moves that tennis in- structors claim every tennis player has to master in order to enjoy playing the game.
