Please see story for more details on Rod Sauder's racing career. Rod Sauder of Scugog Island confident about racing future By Kelly Lown If desire and confidence made a race car driver, Rod Sauder of Port Perry would be taking checkered flags across the country. On the future of his racing ca- reer he says "it is not a question of if I am going to make it, it is when, and it couldn't happen soon enough for me." Sauder, a Scugog Island resi- dent for the past 13 years has been racing cars for 17 years. With more sponsors Sauder would be able to race more of- ten. He also adds that as his equipment improves so do his results. For the past three years, Sauder has competed in the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racingin Florida. He is currently driving in the A.C.T. American Canadian Tour which runs 10 races in Canada, and 10 in the United States. This tour takes the driv- 7-8 Mites On July 22 in 7-8 Mite action Van Camp Contracting met Hank's Pastries. The overcast skies and sprin- kles of rain didn't dampen the spirits and the game between Van Camps and Hanks. There was plenty of action and timely hitting from both teams. Van Camp was supported with the fine play from Nicole Virtue with three hits, three runs scored, Greg Hunter with two hits, two runs scored and Sarah Ver Shuuren with two hits, two runs scored. ' Hank's received a super ef- fort from Darcy Stevens with three hits, three runs scored, Stacey Nicolas Bronson with three hits, two runs scored, and Tyler Houthuys with two hits, two runs scored. After the dust had settled Van Camp squeezed by Hanks by one run with the final score 11-10. Great effort from all the players. ers to race tracks in Vermont, Maine, Quebec, Nova Scotia and locally to Mosport Speed- way in Bowmanville. He has run on a limited schedule at Mosport this year- due to conflicts in other racing schedules. Currently he re- mains in tenth place in points at Mosport, and said the worst he has ever done in a feature heat there is third. One thing Sauder would like to do is race more, and with more sponsors he can do so. He would like to see some busi- nesses from the Scugog area on the side of his car and uniform. Prior to the Molson Indy last week Sauder stated, "I should be in the Molson Indy, not watching it. People believe I can do it, if I just had the chance todoit." Sponsorship may give Saud- er this chance. He explains that the car on the racetrack is just the tip of the iceberg for spon- sors. The cars and trailers are alwayson display. Sauder thinks of his racing career as a 'diamond in the ruff.' " I am going to give some- one a name someday (sponsor); someone is going to benefit from me, " he said. "Racing takes desire, I have enough desire to, I just haven't made the right connection yet," he said. Being a full time race car driver will be a dream come true for this Scugog Island resi- dent. No one can question the commitment he has to his sport. "I would quit my job 10 sec- onds ago, if I knew it was avail- able (the chance to race full- time)," he added. Anyone wishing more infor- mation on Sauder Racing En- terprises or information on sponsoring Sauder is asked to call 985-2977.
