This past week the Port Perry Midget Fastball Team played a home and home series with Scarborough. On Tuesday, both regular pitchers were away. However, John Ennis continued his come-back by pitching an 8-0 ghut-out, allowing only four hits, striking out two and walk- ing one. The action started quickly when Ennis singled to first and Darrell Vander Slagt and Steve Laird hit back to back home runs. In the second in- ning, Jan Heyes hit a triple, and was driven home by rookie outfielder, Ron Redman, on a sacrifice RBI. At this point, Port led 4-0. The team continued to swing the bat well, and also played a strong defensive game behind Ennis. Heyes made an excel- lent diving catch for the third out which would have easily scored the Scarborough run- ners at second and third. Tim Timms began the Thursday night match with a Turn to Page 31 Two victories over Bramalea keeps Bantams The Port Perry Canadian Tire Bantam Boys fastball team remained in first place in the York-Durham League by virtue of two victories over Bra- malea last week. Still savoring their home tournament victory from the previous Saturday, the "Tire- men" travelled to Bramalea and posted a 2-1 win. Jeff Card was superb on the mound as he "tossed" a one hit game and recorded 12 strike- outs. The lone Bramalea run scored late in the game on a walk and an infield throwing error. Port Perry scored their first run in the third inning when Steven Parish had a single and was sacrificed to second base by Chad Kearns he then scored on "back to back" hits by Duane Empringham and Corey Brick- nell. Kent Jamieson scored the eventual winning run in the top of the seventh inning when he walked and stole second base and then came around to score on a throwing error by the short stop. in first Denis Smith and Gavin Co- chrane also added singles in this close victory. The following evening at home, Chad Venning not to be outdone by Jeff Card tossed a nifty one-hit shutout as Port Perry again defeated Bramalea by a score of 4-0. Gavin Cochrane had a big hit night at the plate with a double and a triple, Corey Bricknell had a double and a single, while Chad Venning and Todd Smart had one hit each. Paul Linton preserved the shut-out in the top of the sixth inning when he made a fine catch in deep right field and then threw out the Bramalea runner attempting to advance to second base. The Bantams are now play- ing out their schedule and pre- paring for league and O.A.S.A. play off tournaments in mid and late August. Next home game for the Tire- men is on Tuesday night (to- night) when they play host to Scarborough at 8:30 p.m. at the north diamond at the lakefront parks. Meet Winslow Gerolamy in best of seven series Gamblers head into playoffs in Peterborough on Thursday The four teams who qualified for the Peterborough City Fast- ball league playoffs have been determined and it will be Peter- borough 1.C.G. vs. Red Onion Tavern in one semi-final and Greenbank Gamblers vs. Win- slow Gerolamy Motors in the other semi-final. All playoff series are the best four out of seven and all playoff games in the Peterborough league will be played at the East City Bowl in Peterbo- rough. This is somewhat disap- pointing for the Gambler fans who usually gather in good numbers for playoff games in Greenbank but this condition was agreed to at the beginning of the season. The 1991 season has seen more Greenbank players sit- ting out with injuries than ever before. John Tait missed three weeks after being hit on the el- bow by a pitched ball; Terry Till missed almost a month with a sprained ankle and John Loge- man was out of action for three to four weeks with a badly sprained knee suffered in a first base collision during the Balti- more tournament. John Tait and Trevor Till have returned to the field but John Logeman is sidelined in- definately due to the knee inju- ry and it is not yet known if he will be ready for the Senior Elimination Tournament this weekend in Waterloo or for 0.AS.A. and/or Peterborough playoff action. In addition to the serious in- Juries Greg Warriner, Rod Real and Mike Giroux have all had to sit out games due to a variety of aches and pains. The Gamblers have entered the Men's Double "A" playoffin the 0.A.S.A. this year and in or- der to represent the district the Greenbank squad must get past Peterborough 1.C.G. and the Oshawa Merchants of the L.S.C. This of course will not be an easy accomplishment but Greenbank drew the bye in the 0.AS.A. zone playdowns and will meet the winner of the I.C.G. Oshawa Merchant series for the right to represent the district at the All-Ontario Men's Double "A" Champion- ship. This weekend the Gamblers Speedy meet the Mens Open Champi- ons from Camlachie at Water- loo on Friday night and play again in Waterloo on Saturday in the Ontario Mens Senior El- mination Tournament. So lots of fastball action com- ing at the Gamblers in the next few weeks and they will have to be at the peak of their game to keep their 1991 season going. Game One of the Greenbank- Winslow Gerolamy Motors best of seven series goes this Thurs- day night in Peterborough. Muffler, junior champs Last Saturday, July 27, Speedy Muffler King pulled off a dramatic come-from-behind upset over Lishmans to win the Junior division championship seriesin Nestleton. They did it in fine fashion winning all of their five playoff games beginning with an 18-10 win over Swain Seed Sluggers on Thursday night in Black- stock, followed on Saturday by four consecutive victories over H&M Wright Sox (15-4), Mike Baker Automotive (11-9 and 22-17) and Lishmans (8-7). Lishmans had just completed an undefeated season, their only loss being to Speedy Muf- fler Kingin the final game. Speedy coaches Randy Johns, Connie Stephenson and Don Orr had nothing but praise for all team members for their hard work and their endurance throughout a gruelling playoff structure. During Saturday's action Andrea Stephenson hit five sin- gles and a triple, Jennifer Up- ton notched three singles, a double, and a triple, Kyle McClurg contributed two sin- gles, a double, and five home runs, Jeremy Johns smacked four singles, a double and six home runs. Travis Black connected for three singles, Willie Gould col- lected two singles, and two dou- bles, Grant Arsenault struck for four singles, a double, and a home run, Kyle Elliot stroked three singles and Chad Elliot drew a record 12 bases on balls. Everyone contributed defen- sively to a gratifying series win. MVP honors go to Kyle McClurg who hit a three run homer to tie the final game at 7- 7 and to Jeremy Johns who fol- lowed with a game winning run in the bottom of the last inning. Awards will be presented in Blackstock on August 26. Well done team! LL
