(708) 367-3121 Letters io the editor Farm safety result of careful planning To the Editor: It is with great pleasure that I join with so many others in promoting the 1991 National Farm Safety Week. This year's theme "Farm Safety is No Accident" speaks volumes. Safety on the farm is not achieved haphazardly or simply through good fortune. It is the result of careful plan- ning, taking the necessary pre- cautions and making use of that great home-grown com- modity -- common sense. The range of potential acci- dents on the farm is immense. Farmers, their families and their hired help must all be aware of the proper way to han- Farming one To the Editor: Farming is one of the most hazardous occupations. Acci- dental death and injury rates for agriculture are now among the highest of all major indus- tries, bringing devastating loss- es and suffering to rural fami- lies and their communities. The Canada Safety Council in co-operation with Agricul- ture Canada, John Deere Ltd., and Firestone Canada, is spon- soring the 19th annual Nation- al Farm Safety Week, July 25- 31. The theme is Farm Safety is No Accident. . The aim of this year's cam- Round bales From preceding page round bales. "Adoption of big package hay- ing systems has been very rap- id, largely because of the major labor savings it provides," the association states. But along with the system's benefits come the hazards. One of those hazards is the increased horsepower needed to make the bales as opposed to their smaller rectangular cou- sins. The biggest risk is the physi- cal nature of the balers them- selves, the association states. "A compact package of hay or straw weighing from 500 pounds to 1.6 tons definitel poses some threat to human lifo and limb at every stage of han- dling. And because the bales are round, they can roll rela- tively freely and will gain mo- mentum if the path of travel is downhill." _ The Farm Safety Association is emphasizing the safe han- dling of Jarge bales during Farm Safety Week (July 26-31). dle farm machinery and imple- ments, chemicals and pesti- cides, and farm animals. The extra time and effort needed to ensure that estab- lished safety standards are al- ways met and that common sense prevails in unforeseen situations could well prevent aninjury or even a fatality. We must also pay extra at- tention to the safety of our chil- dren. Kids on a farm are like kids in any other place of work: There is lots for them to be curi- ous about and there is nothing like pitching in to help mom and dad. It is our responsibility to make these young helpers aware of the need to show prop- er caution around farm ma- chines and animals. The good examples set by their parents will stay with these youngsters when they become adult farm- ers themselves. The farming way of life can be richly satisfying. Sadly, it can also be rich with opportuni- ty for tragedy. Let's take advantage of this week to remind ourselves of the care we must take every day of the year to safeguard our- selves, our families and our workers. Signed, Bill McKnight, Federal Minister of Agriculture of most hazardous jobs paign is to help reduce injuries on the farm and to preserve the most valuable resources on the farm -- the farmer, the farm family and the hired help. Accident prevention requires taking the necessary measures ahead of time that can reduce or eliminate the risk of injury. It is the farmer's responsibility to set an example for hired hands and family members. Most preventative practices are just common sense. Tragi- cally, most accidents are caused by simple factors such as carelessness, haste, fatigue and improperly maintained i d ET 0g i hie $e . 2 - ; hill! m & dil | i @ ig / [lw =) ig) " A att? uy i: om, 4 / yo la TR > : J LS BY) AT : 4 - pp---- 0 : { I" 1 /, ol I Ve--_Y, P q .:° 1 ( \ { AR 1 } 7 Al \U a. a: SOLE INNS TE ™ on JR oie machinery. National Farm Safety Week is one week. But I hope this message will serve as a remin- der throughout the year, espe- cially during the summer and harvest seasons. I urge all per- sons who live and work on the farm, all farm associations and safety organizations, to help minimize the high number of serious accidents on the farm by using this week to feature the issue of farm safety.
