We enjoyed a lovely weekend at the cottage. John worked until he couldn't stand the humidity any longer then he plunged into the lake, shorts and all. It's a good thing 1 packed him 5 pairs of shorts. Saturday morning we were pleased to have a resident of Haliburton drop in for coffee. He works for Bell Canada and John has talked to him on the phone. It was nice that John could put a face to the voice he knew so well. John's nephew came for the weekend. He still enjoys splashing the old folks sitting on the dock. I never really ap- Progiated his cannonballs until he anded a few centimeters from Robbie who was trying to balance on a black tube without getting wet. We had a good laugh. Let's hope that Jim Martin is feeling better. He never com- plains but a little birdie told me he hasn't been his usual jovial self. It's good to see Carla McMillan driving to work every day. It's nice to know that she's keeping busy. Sylvia Lindsey looked lovely as she left the hair dressers on Fri- local honor rolls A RE BBE 2 Prince Albert News eggy Bredin SL day. I hope she didn't get caught in the rain. When 1 was checking out the honour roll from Port High School, I was pleased to see so many former Prince Albert students; congratulations to them all. Cory Mason's name was on that list. He is the son of our neighbour and the boy that bounced his head off the pavement last year. We're so glad that first you're alive, and second that the shaking up im- proved your love of school. Keep up the good work. Mrs. Stark (grade 3) always told me you had a good head on your shoulders. Michelle Evans enjoyed a relaxing weekend at her sisters. Michelle took Thursday night off soccer to visit Ruth and her fami- ly. That whole team should have taken the night off. It was much too hot to be running around a field after a black and white ball. I get two wisdom teeth out this week so my spelling and gram- mar will be even worse. Please help me out by phoning with some news. Heather and her friend Kelly Plain travelled to Oshawa last week to watch a movie. The girls were pleased to spend the humid day inside the cool shopping cen- tre. Thanks to Mrs. Plain for tak- ing them. By Gillian Barfoot Lisa and Laura McClure love getting all dressed up with somewhere to go. And if their parents agree, they'll be going to the Sunburst International Beauty Pageant which is being held in Atlanta, Georgia, next summer. Just last weekend they quali- fied to go to the international competition by earning several runner-up places in the nation- al competition held in Toronto. Lisa, 8, was voted first run- ner-up in the beauty wear and bathing suit class, and second runner-up in the photogenic class. Her sister Laura, 6, was the second runner-up in her modelling class. It's unusual for sisters to both win or place in a beauty competition, admit their mother, Julie. But they've done just that, bringing home a tro- phy from every competition they've entered so far. By now, Lisa has 13 trophies and Laura has eight, plus a combined collection of banners, tiaras, ribbons and other priz- es. It all started in 1987 when Lisa was four, and Mrs. McClure's sister and sister-in- law threatened to enter Lisa in the local beauty contest if she didn't. So Lisa competed in the beauty pageant, winning and placing in several categories. She did just as well in the na- tional competition, qualifying for the international competi- tion to be held in Orlando, Flor- ida, in 1988. The trip to Florida was a family holiday and a celebra- tion for Lisa, who took home a couple of three-foot trophies from that competition, plus a TV and other prizes. Her younger sister, Laura, was following close on her heels by that ame, competin, and winning at regional an national levels. They both enjoy dressing up and "they like to be on stage," says Mrs. McClure. "When they go to the pa- geants, they have a great weekend. They go out to a fan- cy supper and get to stay in a hotel," she says. She enjoys sewing, and usu- ally takes about three days to make the dresses and cos- tumes for them. It's a lot cheaper to make them than to buy them, she explains. ' She tells of one dress that was offered for sale at the in- ternational competition in Florida. It was a third-hand dress worn by one of the win- ners, she remembers, and it was on sale for $275 US. To participate in the compe- tition, there is a fee for each class -- beauty wear, modelling, sportswear, party dress, cos- tume, swimwear, talent or pho- togenic -- and each contestant r International Beauty Contest must provide at least one page of advertising for the pageant brochure. It's not that expensive be- cause they only go to a compe- tition once or twice a year, ex- plains their father, Harris. " "If he lids were in hockey 2 gure skating, expenses wou be a lot higher." Lisa and Laura took two Years off from competition, but rs. McClure decided to enter them again this year because it is the last year they will be competing in different classes. Laura will soon be seven, and would have to compete against her sister in the 7 - 10 class in- stead of the 4 - 6 class. We don't want them to take the competition too seriously, says Mr. McClure. "We tell them, 'Just because you were lucky last time doesn't mean youll win again." But for Lisa and Laura, win- ning seems to come naturally. And that's the'beauty of it.
