The Epsom-area resident wants to be crowned All Onta- rio Dairy Princess. And she's well on her way to accomplishing that goal. Wendy was crowned Ontario County Dairy Princess on July 5 at the Ontario County Twi- light Meeting. She and about 40 other con- testants will try for the provin- cial title at the CNE in August 1992. It will be her second attempt as this is the second time Wendy has represented the area as Dairy Princess. Her first term was in the 1989-90 year. Wendy told the Port Perry Star she was hesitant at first to run for the title a second time. The position carries with it a lot of responsibilities and time commitments. She credits her decision to run again with a piece of advice given to her by her former 4-H leader. " "Never say no to an opportu- nity," Wendy recalls 4-H lead- er Marlene Werry telling her once. To qualify for the Dairy Prin- cess title, one must be 16 years of age or older, have worked on a dairy farm for at least six months or have parents who own a dairy operation. Wendy, 19, fits each of these criteria. She has worked on her parents' dairy operation for years. * After a private interview with the three judges and a speech competition at the Twi- light Meeting, Wendy was crowned princess. Her three-minute speech was on how dairy farming affects the economy. Wendy began her speech by asking what would happen to Ontario's economy if dairy ---- N72 2a \) a 7 (7 farming stopped. "Some people would say noth- ing would happen to the econo- my. But did you know that agri- culture and food ranks second in the province's economy only to automobiles?" "Ontario's Agri-Food indus- try contributes more than $16 billion to our provincial econo- my annually," she continued. Wendy told the area dairy farmers they are a vital compo- nent to Ontario's economy. "Did you know that Ontario County's farms directly employ over 3,500 farmers and farm family members, plus 3,000 paid workers?" Not only do the 260 dairy herds in Ontario County pro- duce the finest milk -- Mother Nature's most perfect food, as Wendy calls it -- but also quali- ty milk products such as cheese, ice cream and butter. "Stop dairy farming? Never! "As dairy farmers of Ontario County we should be proud to provide the most fundamental ingredient to life itself... Milk!"
