Jim Scala, from Scala Bros. Auto Parts & Wreckers, said thieves broke into the Utica area compound and stole more than $10,000 worth of car parts, and vandalized many other cars. Among the items taken dur- ing the weekend heist were mag wheels, tires, doors, hoods, a rear hatch for a 1991 Chrysler Daytona. Dash boards were also smashed and 10 radios were stolen. Mr. Scala believes that whoever was involved in the crime knew cars quite well, and knew precisely what they want- ed. "Judging by the stuff that they took, they must have known it was here," he said. From the way some of the items were removed it is also assumed that they had a fair knowledge of automobiles. Dar- ren Scala says careful consider- ation was taken in removing the parts so as not to cause any damage. Jim Scala figures the persons involved had been in the yard on previous occasions and had a shopping list of parts that they wanted. There are many cars and potential parts in the yard but the bulk of the damage was concentrated on the newer model cars, particularly the Chrysler Daytonas. Although it is not certain how many people were involved in the theft, from all indications it would have had to be more than one person. One of the items taken was a hatch cover for a 1989 model Daytona, which weighs an estimated 90 to 110 pounds. Short-term GTA plan to deal with waste crises Environment Minister Ruth Grier has announced a new of- fensive in the war against waste in the Greater Toronto Area(GTA). Her three-part strategy in- volves regional accountability for accelerating waste reduc- tion, the search for long-term, environmentally sound landfill sites for residual wastes, and tough measures to deal with short-term management of sol- id waste. As part of this initiative, Mrs. Grier will be ordering Peel Region and Metropolitan Toronto to prepare for lifts at Britannia Road landfill in 1992. and at Keele Valley in 1994. The lifts, which will raise landfill heights for short-term expansion at the two landfill sites, are designed to keep the GTA's current facilities open until long-term sites can be found. A third operating landfill, Brock West in Durham Region, was considered environmental- ly unsuitable for a lift, but Dur- ham will be expected to build a tranfer station in the region to deliver wastes to Keele Valley. New long-term GTA landfill sites will not be open until at least 1995, said Mrs. Grier. "The prospect of having no- where to dispose of wastes is too great a risk to the health, environment and economy of the regions. This is a risk I will not take." Her orders fall under the emergency powers granted the Minister of the Environment under the Environmental Pro- tection Act. To address waste reduction needs, Mrs. Grier will an- nounce legislation this fall to assign both authority and re- sponsibility for 3Rs activities -- reduction, reuse and recycling -- to the regional governments in the GTA. "These are powers which they will need to get on with the job," said Mrs. Grier. The provincial government's Interim Waste Authority was established in April to find three landfill sites, one in Dur- ham, one in Peel and one with- in the bounds of Metropolitan Toronto and Region of York. The authority has retained con- sulting teams to begin the site searches, which will follow the principles of the environmen- tal assessment process. \\ KARATE BUSH! FULL TIME PROFESSIONAL INSTRUCTION PERMANENT FACILITY Central Air, Fully Equipped, Two Training Halls, Weights, Showers TRAINING AVAILABLE 7 DAYS a WEEK FOR ONE LOW COST Total of 9 Black Belts to Assist It is also believed that the thieves took their time taking the parts. "They had to be here for hours for the amount of stuff they took," said Jim Scala. "Or there must have been a hell of a lot of them." An advertisement in last Tuesday's Port Perry Star of- fered $1,000 "For information leading to the arrest and con- viction of persons that removed auto parts on July 1 weekend." Mr. Scala said he decided to take out the ad in the paper af- ter he heard of a local car deal- ership that met with a similar fate. He said the owner was able to apprehend the crooks af- ter a local resident saw a re- ward posted in a convenience store, and identified the thieves. He is hoping for similar luck. The theft at his compound has prompted Mr. Scala to im- prove the security at the yard. He is contemplating a beefed up alarm system which would include motion detectors. He said in the past they have had guard dogs, but stopped using them some time ago. He says they kept out "the honest per- son," but the crook always found a way in despite the ani- mals. Police have no leads in the case at the present. Anybody with information is asked to call Jim Scala at 985-9767, or contact Durham Police at 579- 1520.
