"A Family Tradition for 125 Years" Eh aie ee bb SS i aie ia FETEa sd WRimEse are Sta) Be PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 16, 1991 - 31 Over 100 armwrestlers take part in Festival Days tourney More than 100 competitors dueled for $5,000 in cash and trophies last Saturday at the 6th annual Port Perry Arm- wrestling Championships held during Festival Days. It was the largest number of entries ever registered for the popular event, and attracted competitors from as far away as Michigan, U.S.A. and New Brunswick. According to organizer Mike Haigh of Port Perry, the Festival Days Armwrestling Championships has grown each year and is now recognized by some of the top armwrestlers as one of the major events of the circuit. Mr. Haigh was pleased that Cobra Rhodes, the American, European and World Champion in the 165 lb. class attended this year. Mr. Rhode competed and won both the 165 and 180 lb. classes, at the Port Perry event. Due to the large number of entries, it took over five hours to run through the elimination and final matches. Trophies and cash prizes of $200 for first; $100 for second, and $50 for third were awarded in the "pro" classes; and trophies were awarded to the first three winners of the amateur classes. Prize money for the event is donated by the Scugog Chamber of Commerce. Best match of the day went to Randy 'Coderre of Eton and Howard McRae of Toronto. These two armwrestlers were awarded plaques for their efforts, which were donated by the Regional Armwrestling Club of Ottawa. The Sportsmanship Award was donated by Port Perry Armwrestling Club and was presented to Sylvio Bourque of Moncton, New Brunswick. Mr. Haigh told the Star the sport of armwrestling is con- tinually gaining in popularity and the 1991 season has been the most active tournament season on record, with close to 50 events scheduled this year. He says he would like to hold the popular event again next summer. Following are the results: LADIES 1st Pam Astle, 2nd Jennifer Batty, 3rd, Rebecca Allen. Results from mini soccer Last week saw another set of exciting mini soccer matches in Port Perry. Sportsland and Taylor Home Fuels had a particularly exciting game ending in a 0-0 tie. Matthew Sutherland had some good tries for Sportsland in a tough first half. Kelly Lukas really hustled well for Taylor Home Fuels in the second half, but the game remain- ed scoreless. Kelly also had an ex- cellent shift in goal, and Tyson Prescott provided great goal ten- ding for Sportsland. Big V shut out IGA by a score of 4-0. Alex McKay got a hat trick with Meghan Smith rounding ott the scoring with one. Matthew Hertzberg also played a strong game for Big V. Although IGA could not manage a goal, Laura Batterink was a standout on offence, and Todd Lance was excellent on defence. The Lions Club was successful against Ridge North Realty by a score of 4-1. Kevin Robins dominated the offence with three goals and Erin Geary scored one. Nelson Langmaid scored the lone marker for Ridge North, and Rhona Scott has shown good im- provement in her play. Fowler, Davies was held scoreless again last week by Williams' Arms, who took that game 2-0. Pat Lewis got both goals. A good defensive effort was made by Alex McRae and the coaching staff is pleased that Marie Gedge is developing. For Fowler, Davies, Kara Olsen had some excellent scoring opportunities, on good long goalie kicks from Brandon Davis, who held the second half of the game scoreless. Bruton's IDA romped over Darlene Colton Photography, 5-1. Michael Sheehan had two goals and Jesse Thompson, Kevin Anderson and Jamie Corneal each had one. Both Christopher Isaacs and Adam Johansen played very well for the photographers. or photographs by Laminating. impossible. The most important part | feel though is that the focus was where it should have been, on the players who worked hard to get there and showed they are the best players inthe game today. I'm glad the limelight never once switched to George Bush or Brian Mulroney. It was a statement in itself that the crowd was there for a baseball game, and could not have cared less if the president, and prime minister were present. Not even an introduction was thrown in their direction. | wonder though if this was Mulroney's idea as he didn't want to risk being booed in front of Mr. Bush. Even after the event the focus of articles on the players still outnumbered the ones on the dignitaries' presence. It was a refreshing change to see the focus being on players such as Cal Ripken Jr., Feguson Jenkins, Toronto's Jimmy Key, Ro- berto Alomar, and Joe Carter. The only item that still annoys me with the dignitaries pres- ence is the fact that the roads to the SkyDome were blocked off for their arrival. In my opinion they should have to sit sweating, uncomfortable, bored, and aggitated like every oth- er driver who takes to the highway. Lord knows Canadians have been left to sweat out a lot of things because of Mulroney, | figure it should have been our opportunity to return the favor. Lown's Downs -Looks like John Cambell made a mistake. The premier driver who drove local colt Precious Bunny to a first place finish at Greenwood in the North America Cup opted to drive Art- splace another promising colt, leaving the driving of Precious Bunny to Jack Moiseyev. Local horse Precious Bunny claimed the $1 million Mea- dowlands Pace on Friday evening leaving Artsplace behind in the two colts first meeting. Artplace was the horse that was slated to rule the roost this year in the 3-year-olds, but it looks as though Precious Bunny will be holding that crown. Campbell was given the choice to drive either horse and chose Artsplace, looks like the winner is Jack Moiseyev who is going to be the talked about driver. -With Precious Bunny in the limelight it is also important to mention that another local horse owned by Paul and Glenn vanCamp is putting in an impressive showing this year. Re- cently the local horse won at Clinton Raceway in the Ontario Sires Stakes Race. The horse Mario Seelster has won six of 13 races this year, claiming more than $21,000 in prize mon- ey. It seems like Scugog Township is making a name for itself in the racing world, and itis hoped these local owners receive much deserved publicity in the horse racing community.
