Last Monday night the team made the long trip to Stroud, south of Barrie and came away with a well played 3-1 win. Chad Venning pitched his best game of the season as he allowed only three hits and had six strike outs. Duane Empringham and Grant Kay each had two singles, with Gavin Cochrane and Chad Kearns each having one hit. Todd Smart turned in a fine game at third base defensively making several excellent plays. The local team returned home on Tuesday night and turned in one of their *'lesser" games of the year as they edged Pickering 8-6 by scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Denis Smith was the winning pitcher. On Saturday Port Perry travell- ed to Cobourg for their annual tournament. In the first game the local boys . played a strong team from Kemp- tville and were defeated 4-0. Jeff Card pitched well in this game, but received little help defensive- ly as the infield play allowed Kemptville to score three runs in the first inning and even after Port Perry loaded the bases in their half of the inning they could not score. Duane Empringham, Todd Smart, Jeff Card and Denis Smith all had base hits in this loss. In game two Denis Smith pitch- ed another of his "tidy" games as Port Perry defeated Bramalea by a score of 11-2. Denis Smith had two singles with Chad Venning, Corey Bricknell and Stephen Stiles each having singles. Gavin Cochrane added one of his long home runs and had two runs batted in. The two wins in three games was not enough for Port Perry to advance to the championship game as Kemptville defeated Napanee. This Saturday the Bantam Fastball Team hosts their annual tournament with teams from Aurora, Thornhill, Oshawa, Stroud. Scarborough. Bramalea. South Frontenac (Kingston) and Port Perry. All the action gets underway at 9 a.m. in the morning and the championship game is slated for 7 p.m. at the Lakefront Park. Should be lots of softball action for the fans. Precious Bunny wins second $1 million race in a single season Precious Bunny became the first harness horse to capture two $1 million races in a single season after winning at the Meadowlands Pace Friday eve- ning. The three-year-old colt is owned by Peter Heffering of Hanover Hills of Port Perry. Although John Campbell was the driver at Precious Bun- ny's win at Greenwood on June 22, he opted to drive another outstanding colt Artsplace. Jack Moiseyev was the driver of record Friday evening, and will continue to be at the helm for the remainder of the season. Trainer Bill Robinson was quoted as saying Bunny's latest performance bordered on awe- some. "1 don't know if he can go any faster but he may not have to," he said after the race. Precious Bunny clocked a 1:49.4 mile, which is the fastest race mile ever by a standard- bred at night. This win has brought Peter Heffering earnings in excess of $1.2 million for the year. Precious Bunny's win has stretched his record to eight wins, two seconds in 10 starts. Mr. Robinson was also quot- ed as saying that Precious Bun- ny came out of the race in good shape and would now be point- ed towards the Art Rooney Pace at Yonkers Raceway starting this Saturday. Large crowds gathered on Queen Street last Saturday to witness demonstration in Karate from a local club. Members of the club are seen here making one of their many moves. Clubhouse may be completed by end of this year Excitement is mounting among members of the Scugog Youth Soccer Club as the long- awaited new clubhouse is clos- er to being a reality. "The architect is drawing up the plans now, and we hope to have it (the clubhouse) finished this year," Ron Cosway told The Star last week. A $23,000 grant from the pro- vincial government was ap- proved recently and will pay for a portion of the estimated $65,000 total cost of the build- ing. The township has contribut- ed $35,000 and the soccer club $8,500. The new clubhouse is slated toinclude a snack bar, showers, meeting room, change rooms, equipment room, and probably the most talked about aspect will be indoor washrooms. Spectators, and players have used outhouses and portable washrooms since the club's in- ception. Mr. Cosway also added that the 20'x10' brick clubhouse will also be fully winterized. The clubhouse will be located close to where the current trail- er now sits, making it easy for electrical and water hook-ups. Over the weekend the annual Festival Days soccer tourna- ment was held at the Soccer Fields and Mr. Cosway stated the club made a nice profit on the snack bar over the two days. "The snack bar has been a way of raising extra funds for the club, and all the money raised is going towards the building fund," he said. Bo a oil, a gl a a al i ty at cS "roa i Hs
