We think the judges should have measured The dog days of summer came to Port Perry Saturday morning with the 20th annual Mutt Show. Dogs truly are man's best friend. That fact was evident by the number of proud entries in the show and the number of spectators who crowded around the Queen Street stage to catch a glimpse of the four-legged fur- ry creatures. One special spectator was Lola McEachern whohas not missed a Mutt Show since it started locally. Doreen Kendall emceed the event, while the judging re- sponsibilities were left up to Judy Aldred, Yvonne Christie and Bill Barr. Winnerin the biggest dog category was "Duke." Port Perry Star readers may remem- ber Duke. He was featuredina front-page story a few months ago after undergoing surgery to remove a 35-pound tumor. Duke's master, Michelle Assel- stine was happy to pick up the first-place ribbon. Placing second and third re- spectively were Pam Craig's dog "Barney" and Matt McClel- « ~N/ . od ~ + 4 Tia the second smallest dog Kelly Corneal give hug for being Best in the Show. Man's best friend on show land's dog "Willie." Smallest dog honors went to "Molly" and Courtney St. John, "Tia" and Alechia Cracknell, and "Gizmo" and Correy Kas- perski. The longest tail category went to "Barney" and his owner Pam Craig. "Prince" and Matt Cracknell, and "Josey" and Ni- cole Barton picked up second and third places. Mandy Edgar's pooch "Flash" won the saddest eyes category. "Capturing second and third were "Abe" and Dawn Keller, and "Buffy" and Adam Leslie. In the curliest fur category, Adam Batchelor's dog "Scooter" won first place, while "Barney" sn) Diane Cooke picked up sec- ond. Longest ear honors went to "Casper" and Kelly Corneal. Second went to "Flash" and Mandy Edgar, while third went to "Buddy" and Steven Har- trick. "Bailey", the faithful com- panion of Jeremy Wheeler, took top spot in the friendliest dog category. "McDundee" and Chase Hadden picked up sec- ond. Third place went to "Dolly" PHOTOS BY JULIA DEMPSEY and Matt Hvidsten. "Willie" and master Matt McClelland dazzled the crowd with some ingenious tricks. Ruth Trent and pooch "Chico" placed second in the best trick category. Elaine Morash picked up the top prize for her dog "Sandy" who least resembles any known breed. "Pugsey" and Melissa Skerratt, and "Barney" and Diane Cooke rounded out the prize winners. The best dressed pooch was Luke Newman's "Tina" who was decked out in a custom- made saddle. "Buster" and Ka- tie Armstrong placed second, while third place was captured by "Midget" and Sara Durward. All the first place winners en- tered the best in show contest. Runner-up was "Scooter" and Adam Batchelor. Best in show honors went to "Casper" and Kelly Corneal. No registration fee was re- quired to enter the Mutt Show, but one little puppy left a depos- it. Much to the amusement of the on-lookers, emcee Doreen Kendall gracefully scooped up the deposit.
