"A Family Tradition for 125 Years" Queen's Park Report MPP shows his report card by Gord Mills Durham East MPP My first year of being your representative at Queen's Park is coming to a close. Here is my first Report Card to give you a brief summary of what we have been doing on your behalf in the consti- tuency office and in the legislature. Many of you already know my constituency assistants Jenny and Kelly who work in the Bowman- ville office. To provide consti- tuents with better service, we recently hired another staff per- son, Harold Becker. Harold will be working with us part-time to help with our increasing work load. Constituents contact us about a wide variety of problems. A large number are social services en- quiries, and worker's compensa- tion cases. Our office in Bowman- ville receives approximately 40 to 50 telephone calls daily. In addi- tion, we usually have four or five people a day dropping in. On Fridays I spend most of the day meeting with constituents who have made appointments. 1 also meet many constituents through the clinics in Port Perry and Manvers. The clinics have been very successful and will continue. This month I will be going door to door in the riding as much as possible to talk with you and see if you need help with anything. We know that when you call or "come in about problems you need immediate action. We try to help you as quickly as possible. Our staff can handle most problems directly or refer constituents to the appropriate contacts. So if you need help with anything, don't be afraid to call, if we can't sort out your problem for you, we will try to put you in touch with someone who can. I feel that in the last year we have accomplished a lot and helped many people through the constituency office and the clinics. It has also been a time of accomplishments in the legislature. Our agenda has provided greater fairness to the economic lives of Ontarians, while preser- ving our health care and educa- tion systems and improving con- ditions for people with low incomes. The budget eliminated or reduced income tax for an addi- tional 120,000 low-income On- tarians. Our commitment not to '"'piggy-back" Ontario sales tax on top of federal GST left $470 million extra dollars in people's pockets this year alone. The Fair Tax Commission will conduct the first major review of Ontario's tax system in 25 years and report on how to make taxes in Ontario more fair. We have introduced an Employee Wage Protection Fund to guarantee wages, severance and termination pay owed to workers if their employer goes bankrupt. Allocated $131 million for research, development and technology assistance to business. Provided $57 million in financial assistance to small and medium- sized manufacturing firms. Ten-thousand new non-profit and co-op housing units will add to the supply of affordable hous- ing and create 20,000 jobs in the hard-hit construction industry. We allocated $40 million for in- come stabilization for grain, oilseed and horticulture pro- ducers and $50 million in interest rate relief for farmers. We also gave funding increases, greater than the rate of inflation, to hospitals, school boards, col- leges and universities and municipalities to prevent a decline in service. Bill 17, a new family support program will bring fairness to single parents and children entitl- ed to support payments from delinquent ex-spouses. Currently, the money owed is more than $330 million. There was $36 million for in- creases to the Ontario Student Assistance Program and changes to increase fairness under the program. These are just some of the in- itiatives we have undertaken. Limited space brings this report card to a stop! Did I pass? Did we as a govern- ment pass? Write or call me to let me know what you think. Your views are important to me. Till next week - be kind to each other. He was deported to Canada on June 28 and arrested by Durham Re- gional Police as he stepped off an airplane at Pearson Interna- tional Airport. The search for Mr. Hudson began after he left Community Memorial Hospital in Port Perry on June 14, 1989. Mr. Hudson had been taken to the hospital for observation after a two-car collision at Vic- toria Corners on Regional Road 23 that day. The crash killed four-year- old Kevin Best of Beaverton. His mother Margaret Best, and his two-year-old brother Colin, were also injured in the acci- dent. According to police reports after the accident, the Best car was southbound on Regional Road 23 when it was hit head- on by a northbound van which crossed the yellow line. Police later issued warrants for Mr. Hudson's arrest on charges ranging from criminal negligence causing death to possession of a restricted weap- on. Since his return to Canada, Mr. Hudson has been detained at the Whitby Jail. He has been denied bail and will await a preliminary hear- ing scheduled for Sept. 9. Why Go Anywhere Else?
