It was a special occasion, meeting so many women once again, from the Second World War era; a time of nostalgia! So much reminiscing for them after the passing of many years. Nestleton Women's Institute Nestleton Women's Institute and several guests held their Ju- ly meeting on Wednesday after- noon with a noon luncheon in Lindsay. Later they attended the matinee at Lindsay Summer Theatre: A program of song and comedy by Catherine McKinnon and Don Harron was most enjoyable. During a brief business meeting, president Rika Wygerde dealt with a few current matters. The sale of Selwyn's book of En- vironmental Household Hints is selling well, and will assist in the campaign to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. : The award to Grade 8 student for the most improvement in writing was presented to Diane Hall at the recent graduation at Cartwright Central Public School, June 25. Neta Fish presented the award. Pennies for Friendship were gathered, and convenor of Inter- national Affairs, Doris Not- tingham, gave an excellent paper on the motto "Peace will come, when the power of love is greater than the love of power." Plan to attend, and help Nestleton Institute celebrate 85 years of community work. Day picnic, success Monday, July 1 marked the 50th annual picnic at Ashburn Park. It was great to see such a good at- tendance join together to celebrate Canada's 124th birth- day. The festivities started at 12 noon with a hamburger and hot- dog barbecue, followed with games, contests, races and the tug-of-war. A giant maple leaf was formed to sing O'Canada, followed with the cutting of the famous maple leaf cake. Special thanks to all those peo- ple who planned and organized to help make it such a fine success. And the weather couldn't have been nicer, could it? Brooklin Horticulture Society held their Annual Rose Show on Wednesday evening, June 26 at Brooklin United Church. There were some fine rose specimens on the show bench, as well as other flowers, fruits and vegetables. Special awards went to Linda Powell for the best red rose. Marg Powell won the award for the best decorative with her mini '""Tid- bit." Tom Leedle from Myrtle was the guest speaker for the evening and gave a very infor- mative talk and slide presentation on "Fences & Other Structures." - There will be no meeting in July. The next meeting will be August 25 and the topic will be "Iris." Verna Laurin, a knowledgeable irisarian from the Canadian Iris Society will be the guest speaker. Also an added feature will be a members iris exchange. Sorry to report that Mrs. Evelyn Lynde is a patient at Whit- by General Hospital. Theo and Joan Knight enjoyed afew days last week with Harvey and Olive Painter at their trailer on Gull Lake. Doug and Florence Ashton visited with Mrs. Ruth Purdy of Orangeville on Sunday, accom- panied by Theo and Joan Knight who visited their daughter Elaine and Jim Ewing. Several from Ashburn attended the 50th wedding anniversary tea at Brooklin United Church last Saturday afternoon in honour of Fred and Audrey Young. Many from far and near gathered together to wish them well on this happy occasion. Lyle Sherwin and his wife Doris from London, On- tario were in attendance. 'Lyle, being Fred's best man fifty years ago. Lyle and his parents served this community well many years ago from the general store. Muriel Fisher spent a week visiting with Frank and Margaret Mitchell of Deep River.
