1 A two car accident Saturday afternoon on Regional Road 21 claimed the lives of an Is- lington couple and sent three Port Perry residents to hospital. Patrick Murphy, his wife Su- san, and son Emmet were taken to hospital with non life threatening Injuries. Two other children of the Murphy's were uninjured. See story on front page for more details. Welfare figures holding steady Durham Region is beginning to see a small glimmer of hope in what seemed like a never- ending welfare crisis. For the first time in 20 'months, Durham recorded only a minimal increase in its over- all caseloads from March to April and the number of people living on welfare actually de- creased slightly. The number of caseloads rose from 9,579 in March to 9,620 in April -- an increase of .4 per cent. Meanwhile, the number of people living on welfare dropped .5 per cent from 16,766 in March to 16,671 in April. And that meant a drop in the gross basic needs expenditure by .9 per cent in April. The total pay-out was down from $5.457- million in March to $5.406- millionin April.
