FREER ES YT EE te yy Fy Trend PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, April 9, 1991 -- 3 COMPARE THE RATE! Seek approval for Queen St. café A Queen Street restaurant owner is seeking permission from Township council to open a licenced patio cafe on the side- walk in front of his building. The request for the 22 seat patio cafe was presented Mon- day by Emiel and Robert Kroo- nenberg of kmiel's Place. In response to questions from council, they said the 22 seats would be against the building, which would leave just over five feet of sidewalk width for pedestrian traffic. The patio would be open from May 24 to Thanksgiving weekend, serving light lunches and beverages. Although there was no ac- tion Monday by council on whether to grant the request, it got a mixed reaction from coun- cillors. Council denies application to sever six building lots An application by the wife of Ward 4 councillor Glenn Mal- colm to re-zone six building lots in North Nestleton has been de- nied by Scugog Township coun- cil. In turning down the appli- cation by Arlene Malcolm, sev- eral councillors said Monday af- ternoon the issue put them in a difficult situation. "We have been put in one April Fools? It appears as if some of our readers keep a better record of the ice leaving Lake Scu- gog than the Star. In last week's report of the ice leaving the lake on April 1st, it was noted this was the same date asin 1990. An alert reader informed us that we reported the ice leaving on April 13, 1990 in last year's paper and a quick check of our files confirmed the information. We're not sure what hap- pened when we pulled the file from the computer, but assume the numeral '3' was deleted from the April 13 date. So, for the record keepers. The ice left Scugog on April 1, 1991, but it was on Good Friday, April 13in 1990. hell of a position," fumed area councillor Don Cochrane. Regional councillor Yvonne Christie said council has been "put between a rock and hard place." Wants planning advice for heavy machinery school Township council will hire a planning consultant to study a proposal to locate a training school for heavy equipment op- erators on Concession 12 in Ward 1. Residents who live in the vicinity of the proposed school run by the International Union of Operating Engineers have expressed bitter opposition to the plans. It appears as if the final de- cision may come from the Onta- rio Municipal Board. Council wants a planning consultant to take an indepen- dent, impartial look at the pro- posal before members vote on the re-zoning application. ~ Please recycle this newspaper ( D SOCIETY presents . . . New York NY 10010 Ward 4 councillor Glenn Malcolm declared a conflict of interest when the matter came up for discussion Monday after- noon and absented himself from the chambers during the lengthy discussion and subse- quent vote. The application filed by Mrs. Malcolm called for a re- zoning to allow six lots to be se- vered from the farm owned jointly by herself and her hus- band in North Nestleton. The lots front Concession 7 and are in the northeast quad- rant of the hamlet, within the defined boundary of the hamlet. At a public meeting two weeks ago, residents of the hamlet spoke out strongly against the application. With council turning down the re-zoning application, Mrs. Malcolm has the option of ap- pealing to the Ontario Munici- pal Board. Last year, Mrs. Malcolm was successful in severing five building lots in the hamlet from the farm. Ward 2 rep Marilyn Pearce raised the issue of whether ad- ditional parking spaces would be needed for the restaurant. Mr. Kroonenberg replied that customers would already be in Port Perry shopping or sight-seeing, so this proposal would not add to any parking problems in the downtown core. Both Mayor Howard Hall and councillor Yvonne Christie said that the concept seems fine, but there would have to be a lot of details, such as the park- ing issue, ironed out before any approvals are granted. The Mayor also raised the issue of whether other licenced restraurants on Queen Street might apply for similar side walk cafes. A decision from council is expected in the near future. 165 QUEEN ST., PORT PERRY | 985-8435 rr Member- Canada Insurance Deposit Corporation For the cherished memories of your special day, get a professional to handle your ...
