Soccer registration Soccer for kids is alive and well in Port Perry this year. The ex- ecutive of the Scugog Soccer Association met last Wednesday to approve the budget and registration schedule for the 1991 season. Parents, whose children wish to lay soccer this year, should note at registration will take place at the YMCA at the following times: Friday, April 5 - 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Sat., April 6-9:00 a.m. -4:00 p.m., Sunday, April 7-12:00- 3:00 p.m.. The cost will be $40.00 per child or $100 per family. This covers the training sessions and house league games, as well as uniforms and pictures at the end of the year. There will be a penalty for registering after these dates, with rates of $50 and $120 applying. Response to the rescheduled an- nual meeting, held in December, exceeded expectations and show- ed that many people in Scugog Township want their children to play soccer and are also willing to help to ensure that a full program is available. Last year, a record 404 children played soccer in this area. An even greater number are ex- pected to register this year, as more opportunities are provided to those who have graduated from the existing programs and now can move up to bantam and junior levels. One major change is the expansion of the mini-soccer format that arises from a directive of the Ontario Soccer Association. This year, all players under 10 years of age will be playing in this format, giving younger players more opportunities to have con- tact with the ball. As a result, however, there will also be many more teams in the under ten age group, this year. Barry Johnston of Sportsland is now actively looking for team sponsors. This is a major task considering the size of the soccer program and the extra teams that will be playing because of the ex- pansion of the mini-soccer program. All in all, the soccer association is expecting another banner year in 1991. Joel also fed Ken Ellis a nifty pass which he quick- ly snapped into the net. Jon Sanders and Devon Symes assisted on a goal scored by Sean I'letcher. The score ended 9-0 for David's and put them into the B Championship against league rivals Remax. Wade Ritchie was awarded the "Best Effort" trophy. In the final game Remax scored first and then Joel Phoenix tied the score at 1-1 with a hard wrist to the upper corner glove side. Tim Wray and Steven Schewaga drew assists. Remax then scored two quick goals; both went to Russ Brown. In the third period Jason Gunn scored a pretty goal on a nice pass from Wade Ritchie to make it 3-2 Remax. Then Joel Phoenix tied the score with another snap shot to the lower corner stick side. Tim Wray and Jon Sanders notch- ed assists. With time running out "hustling" Ken Ellis pounced on the puck as he charged in from the blue line and let go a blast which beat the goalie cleanly.
