Frank Veltri, a vice presi- dent of the Oshawa Durham Home Builders Association, said last week that price and in- terest rates make buying a new home very attractive at this time. And he said builders con- tinue to offer buyers all kinds of incentives, such as paying the GST. "It's a real buyers' market out there right now," said Mr. Veltri. He made the comments as he and fellow vice president Ron Aylsworth paid a quick vis- it to the office of Scugog Town- ship Mayor Howard Hall. The Mayor signed a procla- mation declaring April to be New Homes Month in the Re- gion. This is the third year for New Homes Month, and it has become an important spring campaign for home builders as- sociations all over the country. One of the main aims of the activities during April is to pro- vide information and guidance to consumers. These include such things as improved planning and de- signs of new homes, the use of new materials and methods of construction, and conservation techniques that enhance the en- vironment. ome builders optimistic market on the Mayor signs proclamation Scugog Mayor Howard Hall signs proclamation deciar- ing April as "New Homes Month." With him is Ron Ayl- sworth (left) and Frank Veltri, vice presidents of the Oshawa Durham Home Builders Assoc. Mr. Veltri said builders are optimistic the market for new homes is on the re-bound this spring. (see story) Four tonnes of trash dumped on rural road in Scugog Township Scugog Township could be stuck with a bill for about $1,000 after a truck-load of trash was dumped in the middle of arural road. The incident infuriated Township roads superinten- dent Ronn MacDonald. He reported to council Mon- day afternoon that the trash (some four tonnes of it) was sim- ply dumped from a truck right in the middle of Concession Three, east of the Oshawa Road. He said Durham Police no- tified the Roads department on Saturday with instructions to getifcleaned up asit was a dan- ger to traffic. He said it will cost about $600 to dispose of the trash at a landfill site ($150 per tonne tip- ping fee) plus the cost for Town- ship employees to do the clean- up. However, he said his de- partment is actively working to find the person who dumped the junk. He said a packing slip found among the trash had the name of an auto parts dealer in Weston. The company was contact- ed and Mr. MacDonald was told itisin receivership. Officials with the company agreed to meet with Mr. Mac- Donald this week. He suggested that the auto parts company hired a person to truck trash away, but just dumped the stuff on the rural road to avoid paying the $150 per tonne tipping fee at a land- fill site. This is not the first time loads of garbage have been dumped on roads in Scugog in the past couple of years. Mr. MacDonald told coun- cil that when this kind of dump- ing takes place in Scugog, every effort is made to prosecute the person responsible and recover the Township's cost of the clean- up.
