The new facility opened earlier this month. (see story) Barrett calls facility first rate From Page 4 outdoor kennels for dogs. The kennel area is more than double the space at the old Goodwood facility. And staff can simply pull a lever to open and close the small doors that allow the dogs to get outside. In the past, staff had to leash the dogs, and walk them outside to be "watered." Ms. Barrett, who has worked as an animal control of- ficer for more than 20 years, said the design of the facility and the construction (by J and D Carpentry) are first rate. "They (the contractors) did a great job in the construction," she stated. Of course, animal control is about animals, mostly stray or lost cats and dogs. Ms.Barrett says that legal- ly, the Centre is required to Open 7 Days a Week 180 Queen Street, Port Perry - 985-2818 Black Forest Ham (whole) Baby Black Forest Ham or Honey Ham '3.99. BAKERY | HOT CROSS BUNS 6 for 1.79 z keep an animal just three days, but in most cases, they stay longer in the hopes of returning them to their owners or finding them a new adopted home. Animals that are "adopta- ble" have been kept as long as two weeks to find them a home, rather than having to put them down. Right now at the Centre, there are seven puppies (part hound) waiting for adoption. The staff strives to make sure that pets are "matched" with adopted owners. Only in rare occasions, does the Centre get an animal back after adop- tion. Although most four-legged visitors to the Centre are dogs and cats, Ms. Barrett has a pho- to album of some of the more "unusual guests:" like a coyote found near Utica, a skunk with an apple sauce jar stuck on his snout, and a small cat with a soup can stuck the same way. Not only has the move to the new facility resulted in im- proved working conditions for the staff, the exposure on busy Durham Road 8 has already meant an increase in the public "just dropping in to have a quick look around." "This location will really help to increase public aware- ness," said Ms. Barrett. And the staff are only too happy to meet the public and show them around.
