mm dal a, is Bairds return from 6 week vacation We are so pleased when Scugog residents share their travels with us, so that we may enjoy through their eyes, places and ex- periences, we may never have. At this time we are obliged to Susan and Doug Baird who have lived on Con. 10 E for many years, during which time, Doug worked as a Stockbroker in his home worked at the Medical Centre in the Accounting Dept. As they celebrated a 20th wedding an- niversary this year, they decided to enjoy it prior to the customary 25th. Accordingly, they just returned on March 13 from an ex- tensive 6 week tour of Vancouver, Fiji, Hawaii, Australia and New Zealand. During 2'» weeks in Australia, where they experienced different modes of travel, they spent some time in Sydney with a close nephew, Bruce Barker who is gaining much experience in a 9 month working holiday. They were thrilled with the Great Bar- rier Reef where coral is protected and not even for sale. Two weeks in New Zealand gave them pleasure in visiting the great sheep farms where trained dogs round up the sheep accor- ding to the shepherd's whistle and may even pick out one certain sheep. They watched the shearing where the job on each animal could be completed in five minutes. There are also many deer farms for export of venison. The native Maori people of Polynesian origin , are a happy, friendly lot and love to entertain with their native dances and dress. Bairds enjoyed the scenery along with the hot springs. The beautiful weather for St. Patrick's Day helped encourage the special day for the Island United Church followed by the beautifully decorated brunch oc- casion at the Community Hall sponsored by the Stewards when over 90 people attended and responded encouragingly in the little white envelopes to promote tree en oes Children's Illustrator, in person to autograph your copy of "Franklin Fibs" or another favourite at ... the speed of the new church addition. The Stewards are so enthused they plan future occasions such as a cold meat and strawberry sup- per with tickets and 2 settings for June 22. Then of course, there is the chicken barbeque in August. Many people have offered their help when the building starts. Every time we pick up a paper we are given more information and encouragement regarding our efforts toward recycling. We are surprised at the results and wish to learn more about it. Perhaps the householder or people involved with various pro- ducts may be interested in com- posting. Therefore you may get valuable information and sur- prises if you attend a meeting March 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Scugog Memorial Libary. Centuries ago the Jews used to tell the story of a king who sent his jester to find the most precious thing in the world, Eventually the jester returned with a small parcel. In it was a tongue. The king decided after much thought that the jester had suc- ceeded in his task. "Now, said he, "find me the worst thing in the world." It was a long time before the jester returned with another small parcel. In it was a tongue. You may dismiss this ancient tale lightly. But it does serve to remind us that what we say is often more significant even than what we do. Last week the name of the late Lydia Redman should have been printed as Rodman. Congratulations to Don and Doreen Ashbridge who have specialized in boys and now welcome their 4th grandson. On March 20 the Beavers have been invited to join the 19th District Gshawa for one of their weekly meetings. The boys will have the opportunity to visit with their Beaver buddies and enjoy a puppet show performed by New Kids, a troop that discusses the needs of handicapped children by the use of puppets. On April 2 the Beavers will celebrate April Fool's Day by having a bring-a-friend night. The theme will be **Loonie Night' and the boys are asked to dress in a wacky costume. We hope this evening will be a big hit with the boys. The Cubs have just returned from a winter camp at Camp Samac. The weather was great with lots of sun but unfortunately very little snow. The weekend was packed with badge work, games and nature hikes. Thanks goes to our chef Brian Poirier, the food was terrific.
