Can spring be far away? In the meantime, life continues as usual here on Croissant Crescent, except that we may soon have a bilingual cat on our hands. In January, my wife Em decided that self- improvement was called for to get her through these dark days of winter, and so she has been taking a French course at the local high school. There's a great deal of parlayvooing here now, but Em often finds herself without a partner to practice with. And so our cat Guildwood has become a willing victim - anything for a meal - and re- ceives his dinner in French from Em, who reads the labels to him and calls him "Mon- sieur Guildwood." While we eat ordinary fare like shepherd's pie, Guildwood dines on Ragout Supreme and Boeuf Wellington. My next door neighbour Terry and I were out fixing the fence between our places the oth- er day, and he said he's already thinking about summer. Well, who isn't, I said, but he had something in mind. He wants to install central air conditioning this summer, and someone told him he should consider installing a heat pump instead. Now, this is something I don't know very much about, but he's already read up on it. He said if your house is electrically heated as his is, you can count on saving up to 30 per- cent on your electric heating bills with a heat pump, compared to an electric forced-air fur- nace. A heat pump works like a refrigerator. A fridge doesn't make cook air; it removes heat from the food compartment. The heat pump does the same thing. In summer, it takes out warm air from your home, and in winter it re- verses and heat is extracted from the outside and transferred into your home. So it heats in the winter, and cools in the summer. You can also get a loan to buy one at below-prime inter- est rates. Terry says he learned a lot from a pamphlet he got from The Hydro. And if you need someone to read you the French version, I'm sure my wife or Guildwood would be happy to oblige! This newspaper, in conjunction with Onta- rio Hydro, is bringing you Phil's Basement to help "bring home" ideas on how to save energy. To receive the brochure "Heat Pumps," call On- tario Hydro at 1-800-263-9000 and tell them Phil sent you.
