Do your homework, compare heating systems From Page 1 fying units cannot be hook- ed up to the distribution net- work of a hot water system as they can with a forced- air heating system. Forced-Air Heating Forced air furnaces also work from a central source, except they use forced air and ducts to distribute heat through various outlets, called registers, throughout the house. Fuel (gas or oi!) is burned in the heat exchanger. Today's modern furnaces have a blower to draw air back to the furnace through the return air ductwork and blow the air through the fur- nace and out the supply air ductwork. Prior to these force-air systems, older fur- naces worked on gravity. They relied on warm air generated in the heat ex- changer to rise through the ductwork in the house. Cooler, heavier air fell down the return ductwork. However, modern forced- air systems respond quick- ly when more heat is desired and allow more flexibility in terms of ad- ding on to the distribution system (new registers, humidifiers and central air conditioning). If you decide to replace your forced-air furnace, you may want to consider hav- ing central air conditioning installed at the same time as your new furnace. Check with suppliers to see what's available. Electric Heat In some homes, electric baseboard heaters supple- ment the work of a boiler or furnace; other homes are heated entirely by baseboard units, or forced- air wall units. Some people prefer this type of electric heating because it provides individual control (ther- mostats) for each room. It is also very clean. TRY THE PORT PERRY STAR REAL ESTATE PAGES Some electric heaters may even consist of floor in- serts. Similar to baseboard heaters, they are located directly in the floor. Again, these are controlled by in- dividual thermostats. Electric radiant heat is another way of heating with electricity. Usually located in ceilings, radiant heating systems consist of wires which radiate heat. You may also have an electric furnace; these units work on the same principle as gas or oil forced-air fur- naces, but don't require burners or heat exchangers because no combustion takes place. The drawback to using electricity for heating is the cost; it is generally more expensive. However, some consumers prefer the con- venience and cleanliness of the system. Heat Pumps Heat pumps are another heating option. Used as a supplemental heating system, they are generally not considered strong enough to heat an entire house. They work by taking heat from the outside and bring- ing in into the house at a warmer temperature. In the summer, they transfer heat from your house to the outdoors. Air-source and ground-source pumps are the two most common types of heat pumps. Air-source pumps draw heat from the air (in winter) and tend to be more widely used in Canada. Ground-source heat pumps (sometimes called earth energy systems) pull heat out of the ground or groundwater. Bivalent systems have come on the market more recently and are a combination of an air- to-air heat pump and a small propane-burning fur- nace. This type of unit can replace a furnace.
