Y + 46 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, January 29, 1991 It may be hard to think of spring and outdoor gardening in January, but now is the time to start your geranium, delphinium and impatiens seeds. Each type of seed has its own secret method of germination. The trick is knowing which does what. The rest is easy. Geranium seeds like it warm. The seeds should be scarified or nicked before sowing if the package does not indicate that this has already been done. Simp- ly chip the pointed end of the seed with a razor blade. The seed should then be soaked overnight In warm water. The seeds should be planted in flats or trays with bottom heat provided by heating cables; or place the trays on a radiator or other heat source - on top of the refrigerator or on a plastic- covered heating pad set on low heat. Use a commercial soil mix- ture for seeds or make your own mixture with equal parts of loam, sphagnum moss and perlite. Space the seeds one inch apart in rows two inches apart. Cover seeds with a quarter inch of fine soil. Ideal soil temperature of 72 to 76 degrees Fahrenheit must be maintained for four or five days for successful germination. Cover the seed flat with plastic. The plastic should be removed in four or five days. Lower night air temperature at this point (about 60 degrees F.) will keep seedlings nice and short. The seedlings should be transplanted into small four inch pots as soon as they develop their first true leaves. This will pro- bably be three to four weeks after the seed was sown. A good soil mixture should contain three parts loam, two parts peat moss and one part sand or perlite. Seedling geraniums must have plenty of direct light or be grown PORT PERRY PRINCE ALBERT NITED CHURCH Rev. D. Robert J. LePage, B.A. M. Div. Use a soiless mix and fill so that one inch of room is left at the top. Next, place the seeds evenly over the surface. You can use tweezers. The seeds should be covered by sprinkling with fine compost (through a flour sieve) until the seeds are just covered. They should be covered not greater than their own size. This is important. Place the container in a bath or bowl of water with the level of water about two inches deep and then leave it overnight. This will ensure that the pot will take up exactly the amount of water required. Now cover the container with a brown paper bag with glass over top or with an old wet teatowel - and put on a lower shelf in the basement. EMMANUEL FULL GOSPEL FELLOWSHIP Durham Road 23 and 7th Conc. Germination should take place within fourteen to twenty-one days depending on age of the seed. After a year, seed is not dependable - germination may be poor or completely unsuccessful, so the fresher the seed the better. After fourteen days keep taking a look. If you water properly, the seeds sould not dry out. If you use the old teatowel, keep it moist by spraying. When germination takes place, (usually around the fourteenth day), take the top off and put into light - but not in strong sunlight. Transplant when the true leaves appear. Put into 3 inch pot. Harden off before planting out- side after last frost date. Impatiens need light to ger- minate. Hybrid impatiens like a maximum soil temperature of seventy degrees Fahrenheit to germinate. Any higher will pre- vent them from germinating. Press the seed into the surface of a soiless mix without covering the seed. Provide a uniform moisture level - do not let seeds dry out. If you cover the seed flats with plastic sheets to retain moisture, make sure you keep them semi- shaded and out of the direct rays of the sun. Remove the plastic for a few hours during sunny days to provide proper ventilation so you don't kill the seed. Grow the plants cool - at sixty degrees Fahrenheit, keep them on the dry side and do not fertilize. New Guinea type impatiens need a little higher temperature of seventy-five to seventy-eight degrees in order to germinate. Questions on this or any other gardening topic?
