It took a late goal by Dave Dickson and an empty netter from Rob Kroonenberg to nail down the win. (see article for details of all the games) Atom HL action The Atom House League has been gearing up for the playoffs " the last couple of weeks, and with just 4 games left in the regular season, all 4 teams are just it- ching to get at it. The first game of the day had Gord Lewis Motors challenging the home team, Whit- by Auto- Wreckers. For the first 5 minutes of the first period, both teams were playing at a high pitch with both teams pulling out all the stops. Both goalies, Corey Branton for Gord Lewis and Ryan Puckrin for Whitby Auto Wreckers, stopped everything the offence threw at 'them. .Try as they may, the of- fence was stopped cold at every rn. At the 5:00 minutes mark, is Orr got up a full head of speed, coming out of his own zone, over to Keith Hancock who haul- ed it into the Lewis zone & with a quick wrist shot, upstairs over Corey Brantons right shoulder, to give Whitby the early lead, 1-0. Whitby kept the pressure on, but Corey Branton held his ground, giving nothing free for the remainder of the first period. The first period ended with Whit- by Auto Wreckers 1 and Gord Lewis Motors 0. The second period got off to a quick start when Jay Fletcher took a feed pass into the slot and again it was up and over Corey Brantons shoulder to make the score 2-0 for Whitby. Assisting on the play was David Crouter. With Whitby leading 2-0, they were fly- ing high and was in on the Lewis goalie twice and took point blank shots only to get turned away empty handed. At 4:41 of the second period, Nick Skarratt put the puck right on Scott Hefferins stick and Scott put it into the faceoff circle to Paul Shrigley who rifled one past Ryan Puckrin to close the gap to 2-1. Ryan and Corey both played beautiful goal, to close the second period with Whitby leading 2-1 over Lewis Motors. Again the third period got off to a quick start when Keith Hancock put a nice pass over to Jay Flet- cher and "Hello Dolly" she's 3-1 for Whitby. Scott Hefferin put a quick pass behind the Whitby net to Paul Shrigley who took it in front of the net and slid it under a sliding goalie to close the gap to 3-2 for Whitby. : toe With the third period winding down, Big Luke Newman made a good move to go around a winger, over to Chris Jamieson who wasted no time in making the . score 4-2 for Whitby. This goal proved to be the straw that broke the camels back, because with 45 seconds left in the game, Ryan Puckrin got the puck over to Chris Jamieson who slammed a low hard shot into the corner to make the score 5 to 2. With 11 seconds left in the game, and Whitby leading 5 to 2, Chris Jamieson sent a pss to cen- tre to Luke Newman, in front to Keith Hancock, and its 6-2. As the horn sounds, Whitby Auto Wreckers defeats Gord Lewis Motors. Playing in goal for Lewis Motors was Corey Branton and Ryan Puckrin was in goal for Whitby Auto Wreckers. The second game of the day saw the league leading Lake Scugog Lumber boys taking on the ever tenacious Port Perry Lions squad. The Port Perry Lions drew first blood when Heather Tredway fired a nice pass over to Jeremy Gibson who put a nice pass over to Kevin Hill who sent a low hard shot past goalie Jonathon Froats to make the score Lions 1 and Scugog Lumber 0. Cross country ski tour Looking for an adventure on a dull Sunday afternoon? Then grab your cross-country skis and join the Central Lake Ontario Conser- vation Authority staff on Sunday, February 3 at Heber Down Con- servation Area. Authority staff will conduct a cross-country ski tour of winter wildlife habitat starting at 2:00 p.m. from the winter parking lot. The public is invited to wax up their skis and come out to learn how our woodland animals sur- vive the winter. The tour is free to the public and you do not have to be a professional skier to participate. The winter parking lot is located at the eastern end of Lyndebrook Road. (Take Hwy. No. 12 to Taunton Road, go west 1 km. to Country Lane Road then north to end of road, turn right and watch for signs). Both goalies got stubborn and there was no more scoring until 3:12 when Doug Short took the puck into the Lions corner, beat the defenceman in front to Jeremy Gibson over to David Gainey who blasted one by the Lions goalie to tie things up 1-1. As the first period was winding down, Jeremy Gibson put a nice pass into the slot to Adam Mahaf- fy and boom he blasts a hard shot "into the back of the Scugog Lumber net to end the first period with Port Perry Lions 2 - Scugog Lumber 1. The second period got going in a hurry when Travis Pickard shot the puck to the Lions corner, out to Alex Upton, back to the point to David Gainey who slammed one into the top corner to tie the score at 2 all. Both teams traded rushes - and the goalies did a great job tur- ning all shots aside without any scoring. With the second period winding down, and only 1:21 left the Lions' Kevin Hill, split the defence, over to the ever dangerous Jeremy Gibson and the score is 3-2 for Port Lions. The third period was only two minutes old when Kevin Edwards put a centering pass over to Aaron Levy and it's all tied up again. At the 8:10 mark of the third period, Scugog Lumber had a tic-tac-toe play on, as Alex Upton put Travis Pickard out of the Scugog zone on a quick break, over to David Gainey who forced the Lions goalie to make a good glove save. With the faceoff in the Scugog end of the rink, the puck went over to Alex Upton, back to the point to Kevin Edwards, who let go a rocket and Aaron Levy put in to to give Scugog Lumber the lead 4 to 3. With the third period ticking away, the Port Perry Lions pull- ed their goalie in favour of an ex- tra attacker. With all the Port Lions up front, looking for the equalizer, Scugog Lumbers Justin Sheehey put a clearing pass over to David Gainey, who scored with :39 seconds to go in the game. And so, the horn sounded, and Lake Scugog Lumber boys defeated a spirited Port Perry Lions team 5 to 3. As usual, this game was the same as all Scugog and Lions games, close to the end. Playing in goal for Port Perry Lions was Brad Monsma and for Scugog Lumber, Jonathan Froats. PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, January 29, 1991 -- 41 Mens team in tight battle Game one was a very close checking affair with Compton managing to edge out first place Fitzgerald's by a 2-0 score. Scoring for Compton was "Doc" Thomson from Ron Com- pton and Bruce Smith, then it was Bruce Smith from Ron Compton and Tim Ashbridge. Richard Huggins played a solid game in goal to record the shutout. The second game was also close as Anderson's slipped by Crandell's 3-1. Counting for Anderson's were Bill VanCamp 1 goal, 1 assist, Mike Driscoll and Kelly Lee one goal each. Carl Durward and Larry Jackson each had an assist. The lone marker for Crandell's was Bob Lee from Ken Jeffrey. Game three was a mirror im- age of the first with J&D defeating Sportsland 2-0. Tallying for J&D was Fred Mof- fatt from Dave Mann and Rob Evans from Dave Mann and Fred Moffatt. Playing a great game between the pipes and thus recording the shutout was Troy Glazier. The fourth game was a see-saw battle in which Norton's finally outscored Van & Truck World 5-3. Capitalizing for Norton's were Rob Kroonenberg 2 goals, Dave Dickson 1 goal, 1 assist, Marvin Stevenson and Dave Milton with singles. Assists to Tony Oxley 2, Clarence Stephenson and Bill Haynes. For Van & Truck World it was Brian Samis 2 goals, 1 assist, Dick Martin 1 goal, 1 assist, Richie leFort 2 assists, John Woodward and Len Dawson 1 assist each.
